Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of teaching and tutoring skills.
  • Familiarity with the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) guidelines.
  • Knowledge of learning assistance center programs, services, and recent trends.
  • Knowledge of education as a field: History & philosophy of the field; current state and national organizations; current web sites, list-serves, training materials, research journals, etc..
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Graduate degree in education or related discipline
  • Experience training student staff in a college or university environment
  • Interest in and knowledge of current research, modes of teaching & tutoring.
  • 3+ years of experience in a related academic or academic support position(s), in which a significant percentage of time was dedicated to teaching or other forms of instruction (workshops, tutoring, etc.)
  • Certification from a national organization (CRLA, NTA, ICLCA, etc.)
  • Able to serve as a model instructor and develop evidence-based, effective curricula for training programs.

Job Description:

The Training & Certifications Coordinator manages all aspects of training and professional development for SLACs partnering learning centers and academic departments across Texas State University. It is responsible for the design, development, delivery, and coordination of peer academic learning support training, in alignment with CRLA standards for tutor training programs. Additionally, the position is charged with design and delivery of a training option for student personnel working in instructional capacities such as Teaching and Instructional Assistants for partnering academic departments. The position functions as part of the learning centers professional staff team which involves making presentations; assisting students, faculty, and staff with academic success issues; collaborating through committee initiatives; and participating in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of student training programs, policies, and procedures.



Job Duties:

  1. Develop content, policies, and procedures for campus-wide tutor training that satisfies College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification requirements – Levels I-III. Develop curricula for online and in-person training for campus learning centers and other partnering units.
  2. Develop, implement, and maintain assessment and evaluation methods for peer leader training practices.
  3. Develop a winter or summer institute or other professional development series designed to train graduate assistants, instructional assistants, etc., in preparation for their work teaching or tutoring in their discipline.
  4. Coordinate all logistical aspects of SLACs year-round training practices. Coordinate with campus and Round Rock partners to ensure adequate spaces and other arrangements for delivery of training.
  5. Coordinate and administer all SLAC micro credentials.
  6. Develop an academically-focused workshop series for undergraduates wanting to strengthen their study skills and behaviors
  7. Serve as Co-Chair of committees charged with submission of CRLA certification or re-certification and Supplemental Instruction accreditation or re-accreditation materials as needed.
  8. Function as a member of the SLAC professional staff team by attending staff meetings, making referrals to appropriate campus resources, and promoting SLAC by speaking to classes, student organizations, and faculty/staff about SLAC services and strategies for academic success.
