Department Information

The Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) serves as the catalyst for enhancing the quality of the undergraduate student experience while promoting on-time graduation for all undergraduate students at IU Indianapolis. Three units report up to the DUE: University College, Honors College and the Institute for Engaged Learning.



Job Summary

While the goal is to create a college like learning experience, the average student including Upward Bound Scholars have some foundational gaps. Developing skills, a foundation of knowledge and understanding standards of excellence are the main goals. Instructors are encouraged to think outside of the box and go beyond lectures to engage and teach Upward Bound scholars, these can include, but are not limited to projects, presentations, presenters, and field trips (ideally within walking distance).



Department- Specific Responsibilities

  • Creates an engaging learning experience for high school aged Indianapolis youth, focusing on developing critical thinking skills that would allow them to thrive as college students and beyond.
  • Creates an engaging learning experience dedicated to excellence daily.
    Provides the Upward Bound Program with a detailed syllabus, which should include the following components:
  • Pre and Post Test,
    A grading system with an attendance policy, and
  • Turns in grade reports through Canvas for students every Friday by 12pm.
  • Takes attendance daily utilizing Canvas
    Provides Director/Assistant Director with a completed supply list by April 30, 2026- preferred earlier.
  • Attends or call in to the 12:30pm-1:00pm weekly meetings on Wednesdays during the Summer Academy

EDUCATION


Required

  • Bachelor’s degree


Preferred

  • Secondary school certification or graduate student


SKILLS


Required

  • Demonstrates proficiency in area of study and/or areas of academic need
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with high school youth
  • Dependability and strong communication skills
  • Possesses a high level of maturity, demonstrates self-discipline, and demonstrates the ability to work on a team
  • Demonstrates familiarity with and sensitivity to the needs of program participants


Preferred

  • High ability levels in math and/or science

$25 per hour


Work Hours

Monday – Friday (50 minutes)

Monday – Thursday (1 hour, 15 minutes)
