Summary
Responsible for the
coordination of on-site waste movements, labeling, storage and shipments of hazardous, biological, and universal wastes. Assists Tulane
departments with managing applicable waste streams ensuring compliance with internal Tulane University standards and procedures as well as
all applicable Federal, State, and local regulatory requirements to include but not limited to:

  • Ensure all regulated waste materials
    are characterized, stored, labeled in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate disposal and transportation to
    Tulane University approved facilities by Tulane University approved vendors.
  • Waste/wastewater characterization and
    sampling and coordination with off-site laboratory for analysis.
  • Transports waste from campus areas to waste storage
    area.
  • Performs waste area inspections and file documentation as required. This includes permanent storage locations and
    satellite accumulation areas.
  • Maintains waste disposal records and supports waste generation management in satellite
    accumulation areas.
  • Responsible for Waste Storage Area building, infrastructure, and scheduling maintenance activities as
    required.
  • Supports spill clean-up activities and subsequent incident reporting and investigations to OEHS
  • Maintains inventory of spill response equipment, waste containers and sampling supplies used by OEHS.
  • Meets and
    maintains RCRA and DOT Training requirements.
  • Supports other OEHS personnel as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities:


  • Coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, environmental health sciences, engineering, toxicology,
    occupational safety and health, or related sciences.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local hazardous waste,
    biological waste, and universal waste regulations, consensus standards and guidelines. These may include but are not limited to regulations
    and guidelines from OSHA, EPA, DEQ, DHH, ADA, DHS, NFPA, DOT, ANSI, AAALAC, CDC, and NIH.
  • Knowledge and/or the ability to
    learn to operate sampling or analytical equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory processes related to chemical and
    biomedical research and laboratory waste management.
  • Ability to recognize and work with technical chemical nomenclature
    and formulas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency in word
    processing, spreadsheet/database, and presentation software.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work
    performed.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills, plus the ability to exercise discretion, make
    independent judgment decisions, and handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection.
  • On call availability and willingness to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The position occasionally requires extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting and carrying. Use of personal
protective equipment including respiratory protection, and the ability to work in extreme hot, cold or other restrictive or uncomfortable
environments is also required.

  • Basic knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local hazardous waste, biological waste, and
    universal waste regulations, consensus standards and guidelines. These may include but are not limited to regulations and guidelines from

Required Education and/or Experience:



  • Bachelor’s
    Degree from an accredited institution with 3 years’ managing laboratory chemicals or hazardous waste


OR

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent with 9 years’ experience.
  • Must have a valid and unrestricted (not
    including corrective lens needs) U.S. Driver’s license and must meet the Tulane University Motor Vehicle Policy criteria to become
    authorized as a driver.


OR

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent with 9 years’ experience.
  • Must have a

    criteria to become authorized as a driver.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with laboratory processes
    and safety in a chemical or biomedical research laboratory setting.
  • General knowledge of chemical and biological safety
    requirements.
  • Master’s Degree or five (+) years’ work experience in handling hazardous chemicals, hazardous chemical waste
    and/ or regulated medical waste.
  • Two years’ directly related work experience in a University setting.
  • General knowledge of chemical and biological safety requirements.
  • Master’s Degree or five (+) years’ work experience in handling
    hazardous chemicals, hazardous chemical waste and/ or regulated medical waste.
  • Two years’ directly related work experience in a
    University setting.

This position is classified as “exempt, salaried” and is assigned to pay grade
