Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited school of law
  • Currently licensed to practice law in Texas at the time of application, and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Property Code, Texas Penal Code, Texas Insurance Code, Texas Family Code, Texas Estates Code, contract law, consumer protection law, Title 8 of the United States Code, and the United States Constitution.
  • Demonstrated skill with computer legal research methods, data analytics and assessment, and the preparation of departmental reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret complex legal material and to develop written material and other publications on legal topics relevant to students.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in legal services for students.
  • Experience in non-profit/legal aid services.
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English.
  • Availability to give presentations to groups in the evenings or on weekends, on occasion.
  • Desire and availability to engage with relevant professional organizations.
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas for at least two years.

Job Description:

The mission of the Attorney for Students Office is to promote student persistence, retention, and graduation by eliminating practical barriers to success, providing access to justice, and equipping students with the knowledge and resources to advocate for themselves through high-quality legal consultation, advice, guidance, counsel, and education.


The Staff Attorney role is responsible for providing legal advice, counsel, and limited scope representation to students at Texas State University, giving legal education presentations to groups on campus (including student, faculty, staff, and campus organizations), assisting the Attorney for Students (the managing attorney of the Attorney for Students Office), and performing other duties as assigned. The Staff Attorney reports to the Attorney for Students, and as a member of the Dean of Students Office, will also represent the area in divisional projects / teams. The Staff Attorney may also be assigned other duties as needed.


Job Duties:

  • Provide legal advice, counsel, and limited scope representation to students at Texas State University.
  • Analyze a variety of legal issues and advise students on legal strategies and potential outcomes.
  • Assist students in legal matters, including landlord/tenant law, navigating the criminal justice system, immigration law, civil law, consumer issues, family law, contracts law, insurance law, and simple wills and estates.
  • Provide students with the legal education, resources, tools, and referrals necessary for them to effectively advocate for themselves or secure private legal counsel.
  • Present on legal education topics to students, staff, faculty, and campus organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Remain in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
