This is a technical position responsible for assisting in the maintenance and support of all public safety technology and related equipment used on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. Responsible for following a comprehensive maintenance schedule of all public safety equipment, ensuring equipment functions properly, and researching and recommending new technology. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Assistant Director of Client Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field is preferred.
Two years of related experience is required. Experience with the use and maintenance of computer hardware, software, and networking in an office environment is required. Technical support experience within a police department is preferred. Candidates who have completed at least two years of college coursework, an associate’s degree, or certification in computer maintenance (such as A+, Network +, etc.) may substitute education/certification for the required experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Ensures public safety technology and equipment are in working order and regularly maintained and serviced.
- Develops and evaluates problem determination and resolution techniques.
- Maintains current technical expertise in the rapidly changing area of public safety technology and utilizes state of the art problem determination and resolution techniques to install and maintain supported systems.
- Upholds university policy guidelines as well as recommends new and improved guidelines to ensure the highest quality of service and availability for supported systems.
- Installs and repairs various equipment and software related to public safety technology, data communications, microcomputer systems, and peripherals.
- Maintains and services parking access control equipment and software for parking garages.
- Maintains and services security cameras, their storage devices, hardware, and software.
- Maintains and services all departmental computer hardware and software.
- Maintains and services all burglar alarms equipment installed on the university campus.
- Maintains and services all police technical equipment.
- Maintains and services door access control hardware and software.
- Provides professional support to in-service training.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- May receive and/or supervise the receipt of payments from students and others for departmentally sponsored activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and the institution as it relates to public safety technology.
- Knowledge of current microcomputer hardware and software, installation, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, operating systems such as Windows 7, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2008 Server, and Active Directory.
- Knowledge of maintenance and problem resolution techniques.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, security camera equipment and recording hardware and software.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, burglar alarm equipment.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, door access control hardware and software.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to diffuse and respond effectively to situations involving intense pressure and/or unpredictable persons.
- Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in making technical decisions.
- Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and SFA driving permit under university policy.
