Job Summary
The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for a one-year, full-time, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2026 with requirements to be physically present on the Hattiesburg and/or Gulf Coast campuses. The faculty currently provide training to undergraduate and Master’s students for working with students with high incidence disabilities. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience includes bridging research and practice in Special Education. We aim to recruit applicants with a background in Special Education who can contribute to the Special Education Master’s program but also to the school’s Elementary Education Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaching and mentoring students.
- Supervising special education and/or elementary clinical experiences.
- Demonstrating an understanding of cultural competence.
- Contributing to the mission of the School of Education and profession through service activities.
- Collaborating with colleagues on program development and enhancement.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
Doctoral degree in Special Education or closely related field (by August 2026).
Three (3) or more years of full-time teaching experience with standards-based curriculum in a P-12 classroom.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with all groups of individuals in a timely manner.
- Ability to work with a diverse team in multiple settings.
- Experience with online learning platforms.
- Experience setting clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with both special education and elementary education
Experience leading others in implementing evidence-based instructional practices in P-12 settings
Experience working with students with low incidence disabilities
Experience incorporating technology in instruction and assessment
Evidence of creating equitable and culturally-responsive education experiences.
