Position Overview
The General Maintenance Repair Technician
Senior is responsible for independently or by leading a team to perform a wide variety of maintenance and emergency repair tasks to
University buildings (physical structure, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems), with the position being involved in a regular
program of inspection and repair at a journeyman level using more than one skilled trade. This position requires the operation of work
issued vehicles.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4pm

Job
Description
50% – This is a lead position to assist in the troubleshooting, repair and preventative
maintenance for various plumbing and structural equipment. Installs and maintains assembles and installs a variety of metal and non-metal
piping and pipe fittings for water and compressed air pipes, couplings, traps, and pipe fittings, including those made of brass, copper,
lead and plastic. Joins piping by means of threaded, calked and soldered. Secures pipes to structure with clamps, brackets and hangers,
using hand and power tools. Maintains water softeners. Installs and maintains drinking fountains, lavatories, commodes, etc. Performs all
work in accordance with local building codes and KU standards. Assists in training and mentoring general maintenance
staff.
40% – Assist other trade groups such as electrical, HVAC and carpentry as needed. Responds to emergency calls
such as loss of domestic or heating water or other emergency calls as needed.
10% – Other Related Work as Assigned:
Maintains an adequate supply of tools, parts, and supplies for jobs. Responds to after-hours emergency calls as needed. Assists with other
maintenance areas and in other work areas as assigned. Assists with snow removal and surface treatment.

Requirements
- Reach, grasp, hold, lift and place moderately heavy loads and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without
accommodation. - Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures (hot and cold) inside and
outdoors. - Operate work issued vehicles for transporting staff and materials
- Work occasional planned and unplanned overtime
as needed including responding to after-hours emergencies as needed. - Report to work during declared periods of inclement
weather. - Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.
- Must
digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.
Required
Qualifications
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
- Three (3) years of experience in a skilled craft area.
Certificate from a vocational school or an associate’s degree in a building or mechanical trade area may be substituted for one year of the
required experience. - Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain the license throughout
employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of general maintenance that includes plumbing
troubleshooting and repairs. - Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, equipment and materials associated with a variety of
skilled crafts and building trades as evidenced by application materials. - Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
of skilled crafts and building trades as evidenced by application materials. - Ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints,
electrical or plumbing schematics as demonstrated by work experience. - Experience working in a university, college or multi-building
campus environment as evidenced by application materials.
