Position available through UCSD Temporary Employment Services (TES). Employment through TES is an excellent way to gain

DESCRIPTION

  • Under general
    supervision, independently perform skilled work consistent with the automotive industry such as inspect, adjust, service/maintain, determine
    the corrective action necessary, and repair a variety of UCSD Fleet heavy duty vehicles to include full size transit buses, shuttle buses,
    cutaway buses, and trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds.
  • Install, maintain and repair special equipment; operate
    and maintain tools, machinery and computerized systems used in the maintenance, determination of the corrective action necessary, and repair
    of automotive equipment & sub systems.
  • Estimate the cost of materials and labor for work orders; and keep simple records and
    prepare reports as necessary.
  • May train or provide work instruction to Assistant Heavy Duty Vehicle Technicians.
  • Respond
    to emergency vehicle breakdowns and road assistance service calls for UCSD vehicles.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience and knowledge of Heavy Duty vehicle repair including air and hydraulic brake systems, anti-lock / ABS brake
    systems, heavy duty spring and air suspensions, wheel/tire servicing, A/C climate control and cooling systems, battery & charging systems on
    heavy duty vehicles such as transit buses, shuttle buses, cutaway buses, and trucks with platforms consisting of Cummins Westport, Cummins
    CNG, Caterpillar, John Deere CNG, International, Ford, GM, and Freightliner.
  • Experience inspecting and diagnosing mechanical and
    electrical malfunctions and perform a variety of skilled repairs on Heavy Duty vehicle equipment, components and systems.
  • Ability
    to operate and maintain hand and power tools typically used in the trade. Demonstrates the ability to read & understand, A/C & D/C Voltage,
    ohms, amps, watts.
  • Experience in preventive maintenance, breakdown, repair and trouble shooting of Heavy Duty vehicles.
  • Ability to effectively identify required parts for heavy duty vehicle repair, prepare estimates of costs, time and materials.
  • Ability to effectively reference, interpret and apply information disseminated from mechanical, electrical and other relevant heavy
    duty vehicle schematics, in both hard bound and electronic formats.
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to a heavy duty vehicle
    repair operation including fall protection and fall arrest systems
  • Ability to promote positive public relations in a customer and
    safety-driven environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to read, write and follow oral
    instruction in English.
  • Excellent organizational skills necessary to independently prioritize workload and meet established
    deadlines
  • Basic computer skills, ability to navigate Fleet data base & vehicle maintenance programs, check email, electronic
    timekeeping, and other relative information available through the Internet.
  • Service, diagnoses & repair of air conditioning
    systems.
  • Ability to operate/drive university trucks and trailer to retrieve vehicles from both on and off campus.
  • Must
    possess or obtain within the first three months of employment, and maintain the Class B Driver License with Passenger and Air Brake
    endorsements. Unlicensed employees are not permitted to independently operate vehicles on their own accord without proper
    supervision.

ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION


  • This assignment is expected to last 5-6 months.
  • Work
    Schedule: Nights, 3:30P – 12:00A, Mon-Fri
  • Pay: $31.78 – $38.34/hr. (includes one dollar per hour night differential
    pay)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must possess, or obtain within the first three months of employment, and
    maintain thereafter, the Class B Driver License with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements. Class B Commercial Driver License holders are
    required to participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program and be subject to random drug testing. Unlicensed employees are not permitted to
    independently operate vehicles on their own accord without proper supervision.
  • Must be able to work nights and occasional overtime.
  • Must wear applicable safety wear.
  • FBI/DOJ Background check and clearances required prior to employment.
  • DMV Driving
    Record clearances required prior to employment.

Pay Transparency Act


Annual Full Pay Range: $69,677 – $95,672
(will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)



Hourly Equivalent: $33.37 – $45.82


Factors in determining
the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other
business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the
University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay
for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
