College/Department Information
The Medical
College of Georgia is one of the nation’s largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is
anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second
four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG’s expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across
Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to
small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50
different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts
the health of Georgia’s and America’s children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and
behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician
faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.
Job Summary
Psychiatric- Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a prepared advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with specialized,
advanced education and clinical competency who will function as independent practitioner by providing integrated mental healthcare in an
inpatient hospital. The PMHNP will provide care for various populations across the health continuum. In conjunction with the mission of the
university, and DBHDD, the PMHNP will serve as liaison to the units and functions as a health care professional. The PMHNP will participate
in the educational mission of the institution and will supervise, mentor, and provide evaluative feedback to learners from health
professions. The PMHNP will demonstrate clinical and institutional leadership and model professional nursing
behaviors.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The PMHNP will provide
Integrated mental healthcare for patients with mental health, substance use, and co- morbid mental and physical conditions. Provides a range
of brief prevention, treatment and recovery services, as well as longer-term treatment and support persons with persistent illnesses.
Collaborates with Health Care Team to enhance the delivery of care to eligible patients in accordance with individual patient needs, using
social and behavioral health protocols as general guidance. Prescribes medication for acute and chronic mental illness in accordance with
Scope of Practice as allowed by Georgia Nurse Practice Act.
Counsels and educates patients and families on health behaviors, selfcare
skills and treatment options, communicating as needed with the inter-professional team about the comprehensive care plan. Communicating with
community referral sources to obtain information relating to patients. Provides information to other care providers about the health care
needs of person being discharged. Helps to develop and maintain community and referral relationships.
Ensures quality assurance
measures are met and maintained in programmatic areas. Participates as member for performance improvement initiatives as needs arise; may
assist in staff training, education and mentoring to Improve quality care; and assists in the education and precepting of
students.
Collaborates with nursing leadership to identify and deliver ongoing educational programs. May perform direct teaching or
provide guidance to others in providing these services; responsible for assuring that education and training content meets professional
standards.

Required Qualifications
Educational
Requirements
Masters degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with two years’ experience in professional
nursing.
Active Advanced Practice Registered Nursing licensure in Georgia
American Heart Association BLS
Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Current certification to
practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through approval by the Georgia Nursing Board.
Qualified to obtain
prescriptive authority in the State of Georgia.

ABILITIES
Ability to
formulate diagnoses based on examination and interpretation of test results.
Ability to identify deviations from the norms and
Intervene or make appropriate referrals.
Ability to complete nursing assessments, develop and implement nursing care plans, and
revise plans as appropriate.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of the normal business hours will
likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)
Pay Band: 16
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of
the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
