Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is
required on evenings and weekends


FLSA status: exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

The Systems Administrator is
responsible for maintaining the functionality, security, and stability of computer systems within the Dept. of Earth Environmental and
Resource Sciences at UTEP. This role will help further the mission of the department by ensuring responsive and high-quality technical
support to faculty, staff, and students. The Systems Administrator will also provide user support and training of basic software, assist
with installation of software for courses, contribute to maintaining and updating digital resources, and assist with inventory tracking of
IT hardware software, etc.

Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:


Help administer and support DEERS IT
Infrastructure – Maintain servers, backups, RAID systems, UPS units, and coordination with HPC/TACC facilities. Manage software updates,
licensing, and user accounts on local or departmental systems


User Support and Training – Provide technical support for faculty and
students, including troubleshooting, computer setup, and equipment transitions. (Note that many of these tasks he is restricted in
performing). Offer training in Linux, AI tools, and specialized research software. Technical support for compliance with regulations (e.g.,
export control, data security).



Classroom and Computing Lab Technology – Maintain instructional computer labs, including imaging,
troubleshooting, and assisting end-users, and install class software when requested by faculty.

Data and Research Computing Support
– Assist with data management, backups, and large dataset handling. Support IT needs and assist with creation and development of computing
workflows.



Planning, Procurement, and Inventory – Assist with purchasing hardware/software, tracking inventory, and supporting IT
components of grant proposals. Secure maintenance/insurance contracts when needed for high-value servers.

Web and Digital Resources
– Maintain department websites and shared digital repositories of regional earth and environmental science data and resources.


Deploy, configure, and support hardware in a cross-platform computing environment (Windows, macOS, & Linux).

Provide hands-on and
remote technical support for staff and faculty workstations, mobile devices, printers, and related technology.


Collaborate with
cross-functional teams including UTEP’s centralized IT organization in support of academic and administrative units.

Respond to IT
service requests and incidents via ServiceNow platform, phone, email, MS Teams, or walk-in.


Document system configurations,
procedures, and changes.

Assists with special projects, as needed.


Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to
learn and use institutional software systems.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the
organization’s policies and applicable laws.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university within area of assigned responsibility.

Experience: Three years related experience to the statement of duties and responsibilities;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in
Computer Science or a related field.


Experience administering Windows and Linux servers.

Experience with Windows Active
Directory and group policy management.



Familiarity with industry standard encryption solutions (e.g. BitLocker).

Proficiency
with Window, macOS, and Linux operating systems.


Experience using web content management systems (CMS) such as Cascade.

Familiar with IT product procurement and research of emerging tech
