Software Developer in Computational Science


The Department of Physics and Astronomy seeks a Staff Software Developer with expertise and potential for growth in Python3-based application development for computational electromagnetism (CEM) calculations.

Funded by our recent Naval Engineering Education Consortium (NEEC) grant, and in coordination with NSWC Corona (NAVSEA), this position represents an opportunity to lead a team of undergraduate engineers in computational research with defense and scientific applications. The successful candidate will lead a team of undergraduates to model multibeam, linearly-polarized RF phased arrays in an open-source 3D printing and CAD environment.



Hours: Monday-Friday
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
Full Time/Part Time status: Part-time, 20 hours/week
Salary Range: $33.80 per hour; Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions of the job:

  • Oversee and develop the skills of two undergraduate researchers
  • Update existing code to model 2D and 3D electromagnetic systems
  • Implement modules to aid in 3D visualization of designs
  • Introduce machine learning algorithms to optimize current designs and explore new ones
  • Write scientific and engineering manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

Non-Essential Job Functions:


  • Office software skills
  • Zoom/Discord video call communication
  • Technical report writing

Position Specifications and Requirements:

The successful candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Software development experience (Python3, Miniconda) is required.



Machines, Tools, Equipment, Electronic Devices, and Software: Familiarity with high- performance computing environments (HPCs) is highly useful.

Physical Activity/Effort: Ability to meet online and code with undergraduate researchers


Environmental Conditions: This role is up to 100 percent remote work.
