Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Phlebotomist I within Cancer Epidemiology and Health Outcomes at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.
The primary purpose of the Phlebotomist I, position is to perform phlebotomy through in-person home interviews, collecting and processing biospecimens, and support other aspects of research efforts in a study of breast cancer survivors in New Jersey. This role requires working some evenings and weekends and extensive travel within the Gateway Region in New Jersey to conduct home or site visits for blood collection and processing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, responsible for scheduling and conducting in-person study visits at participants’ homes for data/biospecimen collection, organizing telephone schedule and call records to participants, attending study meetings and performing related duties as needed.
- Collects, handles, processes (e.g., centrifuges and aliquots blood samples), transfers, and ships biospecimens (e.g., blood) from participants following study protocols and IATA and OSHA safety requirements.
- Maintains participants’ records in electronic database and ensures their confidentiality.
- Participates in study meetings.
- Participates in all phases of the study and ensures compliance with the study protocol.

Minimum Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a phlebotomist.
- Completion of an approved phlebotomy training program is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be highly motivated with excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Must be detail-oriented and well-organized.
- Ability to travel independently to various work locations.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to complete data and biospecimen collection with study subjects.
- Must be computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and familiarity with database/reporting tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fluent in Spanish (written and verbal) preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing.
- No special vision requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Office environment. Moderate noise.
- Exposure to blood. Potential exposure to saliva and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory.
