Position Summary
The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor reports to the Assistant Director, Student-Athlete Academic Advising and is responsible for supporting the academic progress, advising needs, and student success of student-athletes.
This position combines comprehensive academic advising with proactive academic coordination and monitoring. The role works closely with student-athletes to develop meaningful educational plans, foster decision-making skills, and promote ownership of their academic experience. In addition, the position collaborates across university offices to identify and address academic and personal barriers to success, while ensuring compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional policies.

Principal Accountabilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Student-Athlete Advising and Academic Support
- Provide holistic academic advising to assigned student-athletes, including course registration, degree planning, transfer credit evaluation, and long-term academic goal setting.
- Maintain accurate academic records and contribute to reporting related to academic standing, eligibility, and graduation certification, and facilitate student understanding of academic requirements, institutional policies, and the purpose of higher education.
- Empower student-athletes to take ownership of their academic experience by developing decision-making, self-advocacy, and progress-monitoring skills, and promote holistic student development by addressing both academic and personal factors impacting success.
- Meet regularly with student-athletes to assess academic progress and provide guidance for improvement. When necessary, assist students experiencing academic difficulty and connect them with appropriate campus resources.
- Maintain strong collaborative relationships with faculty and campus partners (e.g., Amica Center for Career Education, Counseling Services, Academic Center for Excellence, Accessibility Services) to support student success.
Academic Monitoring and Coordination
- Develop and monitor individualized academic success plans and track progress through midterm and end-of-term evaluations.
- Identify academic and non-academic barriers and implement targeted intervention strategies.
- Oversee study hall programming, including supervision, attendance tracking, and communication of outcomes to coaches.
NCAA Compliance and Eligibility
- Monitor and track NCAA, conference, and institutional eligibility requirements. Stay current with legislation and maintain integrity of all processes.
- Assist with certification processes and maintain accurate academic and eligibility records.
Student-Athlete Services and Collaboration
- Coordinate travel letters and communicate with faculty regarding student-athlete absences.
- Work with faculty, the Faculty Athletic Representative, coaches, and other stakeholders to resolve student-athlete academic issues.
- Meet with prospective student-athletes and families to communicate academic expectations and available support services.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Certain duties may be modified to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
Qualifications
This position is best filled by an individual with or in pursuit of a Master’s degree in a related field, and demonstrated knowledge of academic advising. Ability to utilize computerized registration and degree audit applications is required; SCT Banner, EAB Navigate360, and Degree Works experience is desirable. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are required to effectively advise students and interact with faculty and staff. Experience interpreting and administering academic policies is preferred. International, cultural and language experiences/skills although not required are encouraged.
