This position processes and maintains interlibrary loan requests and supports departmental librarians as needed. This is one of four positions that are responsible for all service and clerical duties in the operation of the library’s circulation desk as a public service to students, faculty, and other users. Knowledge of copyright and electronic licensing issues related to interlibrary loan is preferred. Borrows and lend material for interlibrary loan activity. Maintains interlibrary loan policies, LibGuide, and prepares, maintains, and analyzes statistics and narrative reports.

Duties/Responsibilities
- Learns the interlibrary loan module of the library’s automation system to process all interlibrary loan requests in an efficient manner.
- Borrows and lends material for interlibrary loan activity; keeps records of activity.
- Maintains interlibrary loan policies, LibGuide, prepares and maintains and analyzes statistics and narrative reports.
- Remains up to date on copyright and privacy guidelines.
- Working knowledge of print and electronic reference resources.
- Proficiency with online database searching.
- Works with the user in solving problems relating to circulation policies and procedures; recommends changes to circulation policies and procedures when necessary.
- Staffs the circulation desk; explains policies and procedures; checks out and checks in circulating materials.
- Provides limited assistance to library clients on the use of the automated catalog and indexes in both electronic and paper formats; directs users in locating materials; provides assistance with equipment to users.
- Performs opening and closing procedures including preparing the equipment and facilities for the day when working the morning shift or weekend shift; closes the library and secures the building, including shutting down equipment and the facilities for the night when working the evening shift or weekend shift.
- Responsible for the library in conjunction with other library assistants in the absence of the circulation manager or a librarian, which includes notifying Campus Security in the case of problems of the need to evacuate the building.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Learns the interlibrary loan module of the library’s automation system to process all interlibrary loan requests in an efficient manner.
- Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed based on department needs.
- Ability to use a computer and Microsoft applications and learn new technologies; customer service oriented; thoroughness and attention to details; good writing skills; demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical users. Demonstrates a positive attitude towards coworkers, the JU community, and job duties.
Education, Certificates, Licenses and Experience
- At a minimum the selected candidate must have an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university supplemented by three (3) or more years of related experience.
- Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Additionally, the preferred candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university supplemented by three (3) years library focused experience in a college or university setting.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to twenty pounds.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach.
- Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
- Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
