Boston University Information Services & Technology (IS&T) is seeking applicants with diverse skills and
experience to join our innovative and inclusive community. Join us as an AI Engineer III where you will design, develop, and support AI
applications and services that advance university operations, research, and innovation. You will leverage modern AI frameworks, large
language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures, APIs, and emerging technologies to build scalable, reliable, and
maintainable solutions. As part of the AI, Automation, and Data Engineering team, you will report to the Executive Director and work closely
with faculty, staff, researchers, data engineers, and IT professionals in a hybrid work environment based in Boston, MA.



You
Will:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain AI-powered applications and services that support university initiatives.
  • Build and support solutions utilizing technologies such as large language model integrations, vector databases, retrieval-augmented
    generation (RAG) pipelines, APIs, and emerging AI platforms.
  • Translate business, operational, and research requirements into
    scalable technical solutions and contribute to application architecture and design decisions.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical
    issues, identify root causes, and implement effective resolutions to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Partner with faculty,
    staff, and technical teams to deliver AI solutions aligned with institutional goals and user needs.
  • Apply software engineering
    best practices, including code quality standards, testing, documentation, deployment, and lifecycle management.
  • Support secure,
    compliant, and scalable AI environments through monitoring, maintenance, and operational improvements.
  • Evaluate and apply emerging
    AI technologies, tools, and methodologies to enhance existing workflows and solutions.


Required Skills


You Will
Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field (or
    equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering, application development, or
    related technical experience, including experience building AI-enabled solutions.
  • Experience developing applications using modern
    programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or similar technologies.
  • Experience integrating and utilizing large language
    models (LLMs), AI APIs, prompt engineering techniques, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) frameworks.
  • Knowledge of vector
    databases, semantic search technologies, cloud-based AI services, and modern application architecture principles.
  • Experience with
    software development lifecycle practices including source control, testing, deployment automation, and documentation.
  • Ability to
    analyze technical requirements and independently deliver complex solutions with minimal oversight.
  • Strong understanding of
    security, data governance, and operational best practices related to AI-enabled systems.
