Description
JOB SUMMARY: Hatch Learning Commons seeks a dedicated and
knowledgeable Academic Coach to support undergraduate students in the Health and Natural Sciences. Academic Coaches support students in
strengthening their academic skills, confidence, and learning strategies across disciplines; this position provides specialized support for
students in biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and other Health and Natural Sciences courses.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide one-on-one and small-group coaching sessions focused on understanding course material in the sciences, including labs.
- Guide students in using effective memorization and real-world application strategies-such as flashcards, diagrams, charts, concept
mapping, problem-solving, and case-based practice-to master and apply complex Health and Natural Sciences content. - Support students
in developing skills such as time management, critical thinking, and exam preparation. - Collaborate with faculty, librarians, and
academic support staff to align coaching with course expectations. - Engage students through in-class visits to increase awareness of
academic coaching, learning strategies, and available academic supports. - Deliver embedded academic coaching in introductory and
high-need Health and Natural Sciences courses to promote persistence and academic success. - Support a caseload of Health and Natural
Sciences students flagged through academic warning, probation, or early alerts by providing regular outreach, academic support, and progress
monitoring. - Participate in team meetings and training sessions, including ongoing development in Academic Coaching best practices,
and apply these approaches consistently in student support. - Stay current on emerging AI tools and technologies, using them
thoughtfully to support student learning, retention, and academic success. - Maintain accurate records of student appointments.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and encouraging learning environment.
- Uphold student privacy by following all FERPA guidelines
and university confidentiality procedures. - Attend trainings as required.
- Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned by
the University.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a Health or Natural Science discipline, especially
Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Science. Master’s degree preferred. - Tutoring or teaching experience preferred.
- Strong
communication and interpersonal skills. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the
University community including students, faculty, staff, and administrators - Ability to adhere to University policies and
procedures. - Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and within FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.
- All new
employees must complete the FERPA, Anti-Harassment, and any other required online trainings within 15 days of employment. - General
knowledge of the University’s mission, purpose, and goals and the role this position plays in achieving those goals.
