Responsibilities

• Assist in care of small grain and sugar beet trials under the direction of the Research Plot Manager
• Assist in trial layout and preparation, planting, fertilizing, weeding, scouting, mowing, hoeing, staking, data collection, soil sampling and monitoring irrigation system
• Assist in hand harvesting, bagging, labeling, weighing, organizing and boxing samples
• Operate power equipment as required and perform daily required maintenance. On-site safety and operational training is provided for all equipment
• Assist in maintenance and upkeep of work areas, grounds, equipment, vehicles, and buildings and follow safety regulations and procedures

This is a temporary seasonal position. The position is open as early as May/June once school is out and will continue through harvest August/September or once school starts. Start and end dates are flexible based on High School/College schedules. Typical hours run Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, not to exceed 40 hours per week. Working hours may be adjusted due to seasonal demands, weather conditions and special events.

This position has the responsibility of assisting in small grain and sugar beet research trials, as well as grounds maintenance at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center’s North Farm site.

Other tasks may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16
• Background check
• Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions, observatory skills
• Ability to work in a team environment and/or independently
• Must be able to work in a wide range of outdoor conditions including heat, humidity, wind, and rain
• Ability to sit, kneel, stand, and bend frequently and lift 10-50 pounds repeatedly
• Candidates must be willing to travel to offsite field trials periodically

Preferred Qualifications

• Current driver’s license (must be 18+ to drive University vehicles)
• Interest in agriculture research

About the Department

The Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) in Crookston is one of 10 University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers throughout Minnesota. NWROC belongs to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) on the St. Paul, MN Campus. The specific mission of the NWROC is to conduct applied agronomic research on issues important to NW Minnesota agriculture and extend the results of that research through outreach/extension programs.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 – $20.00 per hour, depending on education/qualifications/experience.
