Position Highlights

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies (TLS) in the College of Education invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Elementary Education Program. The appointment begins August 2026 and is based in Tucson, AZ.

This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.

The Elementary Education program is the largest undergraduate program in the COE and prepares students to meet AZ K-8 certification requirements. Additionally students take the necessary course work to receive an ESL and/or Bilingual Endorsement and the K-5 Literacy Endorsement. Our program also offers distance options such as our Pathways to Teaching Program and our Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP).

The Elementary Education program is housed in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies (TLS). The department offers a broad range of programs, including several B.A., M.A., and M.Ed. teacher preparation programs including Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Secondary Education, MA programs in Teaching and Learning and Sports and Recreation Leadership (SRL), and a Ph.D. program in Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies. Our career-track faculty are an integral part of these cutting-edge programs in terms of teaching, curriculum development, mentoring, supervision, grant writing, and program administration.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Teach the equivalent of four courses per semester in the Elementary education undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation program in-person, online, and hybrid formats.
• Supervise and mentor teacher candidates in field experiences and student teaching placements.
• Conduct site visits during the school day to observe, assess, and support teacher candidates in field placements.
• Collaborate with school principals and district partners to coordinate field placements and identify mentor teachers.
• Facilitate communication and coordination among teacher candidates, mentor teachers, site administrators, and program faculty.
• Provide course leadership, coordinate content across course sections, and lead course updates and revisions.
• Contribute to departmental, college, university, and professional service activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrated ability to teach, supervise, and mentor students using in person and online technology-supported learning environments.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively with varied communities and stakeholders, including students, families, faculty, and K-12 partners.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Education or a related field.
• Minimum of three years of teaching experience at the elementary and/or middle grades level in schools serving a variety of students with different needs, including linguistical.
• Experience mentoring and/or coaching preservice teachers or in-service teachers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Content expertise in reading, language arts, and/or literacy.
• Expertise in the teaching and learning of bilingual and multilingual students.
• Experience teaching and/or collaborating with Indigenous schools or communities.
• Experience teaching online or hybrid courses and integrating innovative instructional technologies.
• Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses.
• Experience developing partnerships with public schools in varied communities.
• Leadership experience in schools and/or professional organizations.
• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English.
