UC
Riverside’s Transportation & Parking Services is recruiting for an Automotive Technician, Fleet Services position. The full salary range for
the Automotive Technician is $66,043.44 – $98,115.12 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education,
licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Under the general direction of the Fleet Manager, the
incumbent is responsible for the efficient and safe repair of vehicles assigned to UCR. This includes the inspection and repair of vehicles
as well as the timely performance of scheduled maintenance. The incumbent will maintain a clean and safe shop and will report or repair any
discrepancies. The incumbent will consult with the lead or other technicians as needed. Coordinates taking work off campus to outside
vendors. Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Occupational Health and Safety
(OSHA). Required to hold valid driver’s license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll
in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position.
Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required
to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal,
state, or local government directives may impose additional
requirements.

Experience

  • 2 years hands on experience in a vehicle
    maintenance shop environment performing a variety of duties repairing light and heavy-duty vehicles.

Requirements


Ability to read and understand technical automotive manuals. Ability to lift, carry, stack and move objects
weighing 50 to 70 pounds. Ability to move about the Corporation Yard and campus to gather information, materials and authorizations. Ability
to withstand exposure and possible skin contact to automotive chemicals, fluids and oils. Ability to communicate effectively in English
using appropriate automotive vocabulary to obtain and explain procedures relating to automotive repairs, service and maintenance.
Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with other workers to include office staff ensuring clear and direct exchange of
information. Demonstrated skill in the use of standard automotive tools and equipment used on automobiles. Knowledge and ability to safely
handle hazardous materials typically found in an automotive repair yard, such as used oils, batteries, and auto shop chemicals. Ability to
read and interpret measurement and diagnostic equipment. Ability to write clear and concise diagnostic and maintenance reports. Competency
in providing good customer service and resolving problems with a pleasant and diplomatic demeanor. Ability to work with limited oversight.
Ability to efficiently use a computer and related software, to include an automotive work order system (such as Agile FleetCommander),
Outlook, and Microsoft Office suite. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and
dividing. Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions and to meet deadlines by efficiently organizing, prioritizing and
overlapping work, as well as using non-maintenance time wisely on job related work.

Under the general direction of the Fleet Manager, the incumbent is

Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Inspection, Diagnosis, Repair, and Maintenance * Inspects University
    vehicles and equipment to determine necessary maintenance and repairs. * Performs automotive maintenance and repairs, including major
    mechanical repairs, engine work, tune-ups, brake service, transmission and differential repairs, and related automotive systems work. *
    Responds to equipment malfunctions, mechanical issues, and vehicle repair needs in support of Fleet Services operations. * Operates tow
    trucks and related equipment to move University vehicles and equipment, including field support for disabled vehicles and equipment
    movement. * Assists other technicians as needed to support timely completion of work.

  • Shop Operations, Equipment, Records, and
    Inventory * Keeps the shop, tools, equipment, service yard, and gas/fuel island clean, organized, secured, and in safe operating condition
    in compliance with applicable OSHA requirements, University safety procedures, and department standards. * Operates, cleans, maintains, and
    accounts for automotive shop equipment, tools, supplies, parts, personal protective equipment, and related shop materials. * Supports daily
    shop readiness by preparing work areas, securing tools and equipment, checking supplies, and ensuring the shop is ready for safe and
    efficient operations at the start and end of assigned shifts. * Maintains appropriate inventory levels for assigned supplies, parts, tools,
    personal protective equipment, and shop equipment. * Keeps accurate written records of work performed, parts used, service status, customer
    concerns, and related vehicle maintenance or repair activity.

  • Customer Service, Coordination, and Workflow Support * Coordinates
    with the Lead Technician and office staff to support timely repair of customer vehicles and communicate repair status, delays, additional
    service needs, or other issues affecting vehicle availability. * Responds to after-hours emergencies as assigned and coordinates with the
    Lead Technician, Fleet Services Manager, office staff, or customers as needed to address urgent vehicle or equipment needs. * Communicates
    clearly and professionally with customers regarding vehicle concerns, completed repairs, recommended follow-up, expected timelines, and
    service limitations. * Explains work performed on vehicles to customers when required, using plain language that supports customer
    understanding and confidence in Fleet Services. * Consults with the Lead Technician to determine when vehicles should be referred to outside
    contractors for extensive repairs and helps coordinate related next steps. * Identifies recurring vehicle issues, service delays,
    communication gaps, or repair process concerns and brings them to the attention of the Lead Technician or Fleet Services Manager. * Directs
    the work of student assistants as necessary.

  • Safety, Chemical Handling, and Compliance * Practices safe work techniques and
    follows applicable OSHA guidelines, University safety requirements, shop standards, manufacturer guidelines, and department procedures. *
    Uses required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, hearing protection, face shields,
    respirators, or other assigned protective gear based on the task, equipment, chemical, or work environment. * Ensures personal protective
    equipment is used properly, maintained in serviceable condition, and replaced or reported when damaged, missing, or no longer effective. *
    Properly handles, labels, seals, stores, uses, and disposes of chemicals, fluids, lubricants, fuels, solvents, cleaners, batteries, and
    other hazardous or regulated materials in accordance with applicable safety, environmental, and department procedures. * Responds to
    chemical spills, leaks, or releases by following established containment, cleanup, mitigation, reporting, and disposal procedures. * Reports
    unsafe activities, conditions, equipment, personal protective equipment concerns, chemical handling issues, spills, leaks, or work practices
    to the Lead Technician or Fleet Services Manager.

  • Operational Support for Transportation Services * Provides operational support
    for Transportation Services. * Participates in the development and implementation of the department’s mission, goals, and strategic
    planning. * Assists in the review of operations and services to identify efficiencies and integrate best practices. * Coordinates and/or
    participates in special projects and assignments, the scope of which may extend beyond day-to-day operations.
