Job Title: Building Service Worker/Custodian
Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt position – 12 month work schedule
Wage Grade: 710
Reports To: Custodial Zone leader
Overview: Under the general direction of the Custodial Zone Leader, custodians are responsible for the internal appearance of our buildings. It is important for custodians to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises, as well as preventing vandalism. The ideal candidate will have previous custodial experience and be familiar with chemicals and equipment to complete the job efficiently and safely. Custodians must possess a high level of physical endurance to cover a large space as well as a keen eye for detail.
Essential Job Duties:
- Cleans and maintains assigned areas on campus according to established school standards. Cleaning and maintenance duties frequently include vacuuming, mopping, and sweeping of floors, emptying trash, cleaning bathroom areas, window and door cleaning, snow and leaf removal, and other basic duties.
- Perform periodic deep cleaning duties as assigned which often include polishing and buffing of floors, shampoo of carpets, stripping and waxing of floors, window washing, and removal or moving of furniture.
- Set-up and tear down of designated spaces as needed including set-up and take down of tables, chairs and/or serving equipment.
- Work with other staff in a cooperative manner to accomplish tasks in designated area. Adapt to changing requests and supervisory instructions.
- Identify issues in assigned areas that need additional attention and communicate these needs to supervisory staff. Assist other staff members as needed or requested to ensure the campus meets highest possible cleanliness levels.
- Accomplishes all duties in accordance with established safety principles and guidelines.
- Work with other facilities staff members on special projects including cleaning of Transitional Living Areas, campus owned housing, and preparation of campus buildings for special events.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for student workers.
Skills & Experience:
- 1-3 years of cleaning and/or maintenance experience in a team-based environment
- Excellent service orientation and ability to relate to a diverse campus population including co-workers, faculty members, students and visitors
- Willingness and ability to work with a variety of personalities and adapt to the changing needs of the campus, including a variety of work locations
- Skill in using a computer to communicate and complete work tasks. Ability to work with limited supervision and work effectively independently and as p 1-3 years of cleaning and/or maintenance experience in a team-based environment
- Excellent service orientation and ability to relate to a diverse campus population including co-workers, faculty members, students and visitors
- Willingness and ability to work with a variety of personalities and adapt to the changing needs of the campus, including a variety of work locations
- Skill in using a computer to communicate and complete work tasks. Ability to work with limited supervision and work effectively independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work to high productivity standards with limited supervision
- Ability to utilize a radio for frequent communication including the ability to hear and speak clearly
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Work Environment: This job operates in a varied work environment including time in an office environment, classroom environment and residential living areas, as well as some outdoor work. Limited exposure to extreme heat and cold weather conditions are expected.
Physical Demands:
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis and 75 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Must be able to push and pull heavy machinery on a frequent basis.
- This position requires frequent climbing of stairs and occasional work on ladders.
- Ability to listen, hear, speak, read, write, , bend, stoop, and stand for long periods of time.
- Must possess finger and hand dexterity for using small tools and equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors for snow removal in the winter months and may experience extreme temperatures in non-air conditioned environments in the summer months.
Expected hours of work: This is a Full-time position with a 40 hour work week. Standard days and hours of work are Monday – Friday 5-6 a.m. through 1-2 p.m. On rare occasions and subject to supervisor approval, overtime may be required.
Academic Year: 40 hours per week
Summer: 40 hours per week
Travel: Little to no travel is expected for this position.
