Job Category: Staff – Professional
Organizational Unit Overview:
The Division of Infectious Disease is a unit within the leadership of the Brody School of Medicine Internal Medicine Department, providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of infections. Infectious Disease doctors help ensure the timely diagnosis and treatment of acute infections by recommending appropriate diagnostic tests to identify the source and recommending the appropriate antibiotic to treat the infection. Inpatient and outpatient consultations are available for a wide variety of illnesses, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS, postsurgical infections, skin and soft tissue infections, infections in cancer patients, bone and joint infections, pneumonia, sepsis, emerging infections, and fever of unknown origin. Additionally, we offer an International Travelers Clinic that provides travel advice and immunizations for individuals traveling overseas. The Ryan White program is the largest initiative within the Division of Infectious Diseases, providing services to patients across 28 counties in eastern North Carolina. Our physicians and physician extenders currently care for over 1,800 Ryan White patients throughout this region and its surrounding areas. Faculty members collect clinical and social data to better understand and address the social determinants of health that contribute to the disproportionately high HIV infection rates among specific populations. The division is also involved in numerous clinical trials focused on HIV therapies, which offer essential medications to individuals who might otherwise lack access to treatment. The Ryan White Program enables patients access to medical care services at little or no cost and expands the array of specialty medical services (e.g., nutrition, mental health/substance use counseling, dental services, case management, transportation assistance) through grant funds. The Department of Internal Medicine plays a vital role in advancing the mission of East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, which focuses on three primary goals: 1) providing healthcare to citizens of eastern North Carolina, 2) training primary care physicians to meet the healthcare needs of the region, and 3) making medical education accessible to underserved populations. By collecting and analyzing data, faculty can make informed decisions that help patients improve their health outcomes.
