Custodial Supervisor


Position Summary:

The Custodial/ Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision of all full time and numerous part time custodial personnel. Vincennes University is comprised of over 50 buildings with 1.5 million square feet.



Responsibilities

  • Achieve high levels of communication between university offices and originations.
  • Actively supervises, inspects, and evaluates all custodial work and personnel, is responsible for the supervision of Lead Custodian and warehouse employees on all shifts.
  • Develops and adjusts all custodial and warehouse work schedules to insure adequate coverage, for buildings and shipments.
  • Assists in inventory control and selection/purchasing of custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Carries a cell phone and responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis: some weekend and holiday work may be required.
  • Assists in custodial and warehouse work when supervisory tasks do not require his/her full attention.
  • Schedules custodial equipment and personnel in support of campus activities a setup.
  • Participates in the selection, interview, hiring process, disciplining actions, and prepare evaluations for custodial staff, lead, and second/third shift custodial and warehouse staff.
  • May be required to serve on selected committees and participate in special assignments.
  • Will assist and implement group training and educational activities concerning safety, product utilization, custodial procedures, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Director of Physical Plant.
  • Will assume responsibility for other Department Supervisors as assigned during absences.
  • Conducts custodial and warehouse operation assessments and provides recommendations for staff and equipment assignment to ensure a safe, efficient operation.
  • Maintain records, and document necessary information for custodial and warehouse needs.

Your Qualifications



Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalency, with basic computer skills preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in custodial work in an institutional, commercial, or industrial environment.
  • Two years’ supervisory experience or equivalent. Possesses working knowledge of performance evaluation process and disciplinary procedures.
  • Ability to communicate well with all levels of Physical Plant and University Personnel.
  • Ability to organize work tasks and personnel for 60 + full time employees.
  • Forklift Operation Certification.
  • Ability to operate and maintain custodial equipment.
  • Knowledge of custodial techniques, chemicals, and equipment in all types of building areas, including chemistry and medical labs, funeral services, hardwood gym floors, bio-hazardous waste, food service, etc.
  • Ability to read blue prints and building floor plans to provide adequate and efficient custodial coverage.
  • General/working knowledge of the mechanical and building systems of the University.
  • Knowledge of the preventive maintenance schedule and procedures used by the Physical Plant.
  • 2 years of experience as a Warehouse Supervisor or similar role
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to manage inventory
  • Ability to analyze data and provide insights from data
  • Critical thinker and problem-solving skills

  • Good time-management skills
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiarity with applicable local, states, and federal regulations including usage of SDS sheets, handling of bio-hazardous wastes, asbestos awareness, OSHA, etc.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
* Standing, bending, climbing, carrying, reaching, handling, and use of fingers 50% or more of the work day.
* Regular attendance is required for this position. Actual schedule contingent upon the needs of this Department and Vincennes University. Works both indoors and outdoors, occasionally under inclement weather conditions.
* Frequently exerting 10-50 pounds of force. Occasionally lifting 50-100 pounds and over.
