Nephrology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a leading center for patient care, research, and education, serving a diverse
population across Virginia. Our team includes more than 20 full-time clinicians and research faculty, advanced practice providers, and
nurses dedicated to advancing kidney health.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Core Responsibilities:
  • Design
    and conduct independent and collaborative computational research studies.
  • Develop, implement, and validate machine learning and AI
    models linking imaging, molecular, and clinical data.
  • Lead data integration pipelines across multi-modal sources (EHR, digital
    pathology, genomics/transcriptomics, and laboratory datasets).
  • Collaborate with nephrology investigators, biostatisticians, and
    pathology/molecular research teams to design analyses that address clinical and scientific questions.
  • Contribute to grant
    applications, manuscripts, and presentations by providing analytic leadership, interpretation, and visualization of results.
  • Supervise and mentor trainees, students, and analysts involved in related projects.
  • Ensure compliance with IRB protocols,
    institutional data governance, and regulatory standards.

Comprehensive Kidney Care
Clinical Services
We offer a robust
inpatient and outpatient kidney disease program at VCU Health, supported by five outpatient dialysis units to deliver state-of-the-art care
to patients with chronic and acute kidney conditions. Our faculty provide specialized expertise in:



* Glomerular Kidney Diseases:
Diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as glomerulonephritis and other immune-mediated kidney disorders.
* Inherited kidney
diseases: Kidney care that uses state-of-the-art genetic testing to identify heritable conditions, which then enables targeted care for
conditions such as polycystic kidney disease, etc.
* Home dialysis programs
* Kidney Pharmacology and Hypertension: The Hypertension
Clinic at VCU Hospital provides specialized care for patients with resistant, secondary, and complex hypertension. It focuses on
comprehensive blood pressure management using advanced diagnostics, including ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and renovascular
assessments.
* Onconephrology: Kidney care tailored to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
* Kidney transplantation: Kidney care
tailored to patients who are in need for a transplant or have received a kidney transplant.

Salary Range: $60,000 – $70,000

Qualifications:

Minimum
Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with
    a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at
    VCU.
  • Demonstrated research experience in applying advanced analytics or AI/ML methods to biomedical data.
    * Expertise in
    programming languages (R, Python, or similar) and high-performance computing workflows.
    * Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and
    research productivity.
    * Excellent communication and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary teams.
    * Bachelor’s degree in computer
    science, Mathematics, Human and Molecular Genetics, Computational Biology, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or a
    related quantitative discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with digital pathology,
transcriptomics, or other omics data.
* Familiarity with nephrology, transplantation, or immunology research.
* Knowledge of clinical
research operations and regulatory requirements.



* PhD in Human and Molecular Genetics, Computational Biology, Biomedical
Informatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
