Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a full-time, 10-month Director of Sports Medicine position. This
leadership role oversees the College’s NCAA Division III sports medicine program, including student-athlete healthcare, injury prevention
and management, emergency care, return-to-play decisions, department operations, and staff supervision. The Director works collaboratively
with the sports medicine staff, team physicians, coaches, athletic administrators, and campus partners to ensure high-quality care and
practices aligned with industry standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate medical care of
intercollegiate student-athletes in accordance with the RMC Policies and Procedures Manual, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and
rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. - Envision and develop programs that advance sports medicine services and promote
student-athlete health and wellness in alignment with Randolph-Macon College’s philosophy and resources. - Collaborate effectively
with athletic administration, coaches, RMC staff, student-athletes, and campus partners to support and advance sports medicine services and
student-athlete well-being. - Make appropriate decisions in areas of therapeutic exercise, therapeutic modalities, manual therapy
treatments and return to play. - Organize and provide athletic training coverage for practices, competitions, and other athletic
events as needed. - Implement injury prevention strategies, including taping, bracing, therapeutic exercise, and movement screening to
prepare athletes for participation. - Refer student-athletes to team physicians as appropriate and implement physician-directed
treatment plans for injury management. - Communicate professionally and effectively across a large, diverse population including, but
not limited to, all student-athletes, fellow staff, athletic training students, physicians, coaches, and other sports medicine umbrella
practitioners. - Make appropriate decisions regarding sports medicine emergency action plans and implement plans for each athletic
venue.
Administrative Duties:
- Supervise and evaluate sports medicine staff, including
oversight of patient flow, scheduling, documentation, and case management. - Collaborate directly with team physicians and athletic
administration in developing sports medicine services and direction of the department. - Serve as a senior member of the athletic
administration team. - Maintain medical records, including injury reports, medical treatments, rehabilitation programs, medical
referrals, and other medical records. - Develop and maintain Sports Medicine department guidelines, policies, and procedures in
accordance with national/international best practices and consensus statements. - With team physicians, develop and maintain emergency
action plans for all practice and competition venues in accordance with college risk management guidelines and state
regulations. - Maintain communication with insurance providers and ensure claims are filed in a timely manner.
- Manage the
Athletic Training Facility, including budgets, equipment, supplies, and policies to support health, safety, and welfare of all
constituents. - Coordinate the purchasing and use of equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility
in accordance with State and College policies. - Ensure Athletic Department staff maintain First Aid, CPR, and AED
certification. - Implement and rehearse health and safety best practices.
- Serve as NCAA Health Care Administrator and maintain
campus relationships to support departmental goals and student-athlete welfare. - Alumni relations: work with senior athletic
administration and development office fundraising for sports medicine-related
areas.
Compliance:
- Meet the expectations and professional responsibilities of
Randolph-Macon College, the Randolph-Macon Sports Medicine Department, and the Athletic Department. - Follow the standards, practices,
and procedures of the ODAC, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and National Athletic Trainers’ Association. - Complete and
comply with OSHA training requirements and HIPAA Privacy and Security regulations. - Report non-compliance incidents to the
supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Office. - Maintain NATABOC certification, Commonwealth of Virginia licensure, and CPR/First Aid
certification.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in specialized curriculum accredited by the
Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education is required. - 7+ years of professional experience specifically with injury
prevention and managing multiple teams in a high-volume clinical environment required. - Must be certified by the National Athletic
Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) and have Virginia State Athletic Training Licensure or be eligible to attain
licensure. - Familiarity with NCAA governing rules is highly preferred.
