Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Dispatcher (Buses) for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). This position is entrusted with overseeing and directing real-time dispatch coordination for buses and shuttles across multiple routes, ensuring the seamless movement of thousands of students, faculty, staff, and visitors daily.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- The Dispatcher (Buses) plays a key role in advancing the university’s mobility goals by ensuring service reliability, safety, and responsiveness under all conditions, regularly communicates with New Brunswick and Piscataway residents to provide detailed transit information; external police departments to assist with emergencies on the buses; public works departments to report road conditions and request emergency repairs; outside transit providers to give directions and coordinate vehicle parking on campus; and to provide operational direction to the transit provider.
- This position utilizes advanced transportation technologies and data systems to drive real-time decision-making, operational efficiency, and proactive service adjustments.
- As the primary liaison between operators, supervisors, road supervisors and support staff, this role ensures unified communication and rapid response to service disruptions, emergencies, and logistical challenges.
- While maintaining uninterrupted, high-quality service delivery that reflects the university’s standards of excellence and compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Minimum Education and Experience
- High school or vocational school education and at least four years of experience in transportation operations, dispatch, or fleet management, with mass transit or university transportation experience.
Certifications/Licenses
- A valid driver’s license with at least two years of driving experience and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course are required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- The role demands strong management of operations in fast-paced, time-sensitive environments.
- Candidates must have solid technical proficiency with AVL/GPS tracking systems, dispatching software, data reporting tools, transit scheduling, fixed-route planning, and regulatory compliance, along with the ability to coordinate complex service adjustments across departments.
