Position Information
Reporting to the Skilled Crafts Trades Supervisor in the Facilities
Services Maintenance Department, the Lead Carpenter performs journey-level work related to the construction, repair, restoration, and
installation of building structures, flooring, furniture, etc. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor’s absence and acts as a
subject matter expert who provides leadership to team members. The Lead Carpenter is responsible for operating and training others on:
equipment, methods, and materials used to perform various carpentry projects throughout the University of California, Riverside campus. This
position may work independently or as part of a team and responds to emergency situations during or after hours to resolve immediate
concerns and correct safety issues. Maintains a positive attitude for the team and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors,
staff, faculty and students.
The full salary range for the Lead Carpenter is $46.71 – $52.58 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety
of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a certified apprenticeship
program.
Experience
- 5 years of journey-level experience as a carpenter performing specialized fine
carpentry, furniture/cabinet making, framing, wood working and joinery, and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an
equivalent combination of education, training and experience. - 1 year of experience leading, guiding, and/or supervising a team.
- Experience in safely using and operating hand and power tools common to all skilled trades.

proper handling procedures of asbestos, mold, and lead paint. Ability to follow safety precautions and utilize appropriate safety devices,
equipment, and gear to safely perform duties. Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations. Ability to follow verbal and
written instructions. Ability to work with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary
customer service. Ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, and emergency requests. Knowledge and ability to prepare layouts, build
and install building structures, set forms, fabricate, repair and install cabinetry, perform post and beam construction, and all facets of
rough and finish work. Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime,
emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed. Knowledge and ability to perform skilled carpentry work. Skilled use and maintaining
of carpentry tools and test equipment. Ability to withstand frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work outdoors in
extreme and inclement weather conditions. Ability to work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, dangerous, and/or hazardous
substances. Ability to estimate time, methods, and materials needed from construction documents. Ability to read and understanding documents
such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blue prints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams. Ability to work from
varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Ability to perform repetitive lifting, stooping, kneeling,
pushing, pulling, and reaching. Ability to load, carry, move, and manipulate various building materials. Ability to effectively communicate
and understand safety regulations and hazards. Knowledge of common safety procedures, regulations, and applicable
codes.

Key Responsibilities
- Carpentry & Maintenance:
Constructs, repairs, restores, assembles, finishes
and installs building structures and fixtures, furniture, shelving, drywall, and performs all facets of rough and finish work.Constructs
partition walls, including setting of jams, doors, and hardware installation. Repairs and installs ceiling tiles and roofs.Designs,
fabricates, installs and repairs cabinets, solid surface tops, and plastic laminates or wood veneers, as needed.Cuts and installs glass
windows and mirrors, wood and metal doors, frames (wood and metal studs), repairs ceramic walls, floor tiles, and makes repairs to various
types of flooring and bases.
Contracts and sets forms for concrete, finishes concrete and makes repairs to broken concrete. Performs saw
cutting, breaking, removal of concrete and asphalt.Performs post and beam construction: builds, constructs, repairs, and installs stairs,
decks, porches, wood fencing, siding, etc.
Performs building layout and demolition as needed. Performs T-Bar repair and installation.
Hauls, loads, lifts, holds and moves materials, supplies, or tools, as needed. Digs and shore trenches, excavates and performs other forms
of site preparation.Responds to and repairs roof leaks.
- Lead Responsibilities:
Leads, guides, and clarifies instructions.
Assigns work orders for the maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, modification, and inspection of service requests. Acts as a
subject matter expert.Makes recommendations on staff, equipment, materials, cost savings, and efficiency improvements. Makes
recommendations on work assignments based on individual skill sets. Trains new members on campus systems, procedures, and methods.
Establishes and maintains a high level of professionalism that supports collaboration and problem solving while building strong working
relationships with customers, colleagues, contractors, and campus partners.Performs job walks or scope work as necessary. Develops
estimates for labor and material, take-off’s, isometrics, and plans in accordance with code requirements.Oversee the maintenance of tools
and equipment. Ensures the safe operation of equipment and safety procedures are performed while working. May oversee scheduled and
emergency maintenance repairs. Provides administrative support by processing work order requests and prepares written documentation of work
performed in a clear concise manner. Submits purchase requests through the University purchasing system.Responds to customer complaints
and request for information. Works with customer and campus personnel to accurately define the nature of the problem, determine the
appropriate course of action, make recommendations, and follow up to ensure resolution has been effective. - Communication &
Customer Service:Serves as liaison with clients and relays their needs to the appropriate department or supervisor.
Communicates and
reports to a supervisor or staff regarding any potential issues and/or safety hazards: broken glass, regulated materials, damaged steps,
excess water, fire, etc., or liabilities during the day-to-day operations.Contacts Facilities Services teams when further action is
required. Responds to customer complaints and requests for information. - Shop Support:
Maintains working knowledge of the proper
and safe usage of maintenance equipment and various maintenance skilled trades. Keeps track of shop materials/parts.Performs computer
input within the work order system for recording of labor and materials used in work perform. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of
all inspections, testing, and maintenance performed.Maintains knowledge of building and safety codes, hazardous material handling, and
disposal.
Collaborates with other skilled trades and Facilities Services team members to complete minor renovation projects and maintenance
projects.Cleans truck and shop while maintaining organization of materials and tools. Performs routine maintenance or coordinates repair
or replacement of tools and equipment. Accounts for shop parts, inventory, and reports supply needs to be restocked.Consults with
supervisor for technical information as needed. Interprets prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and written descriptions of
project requirements.Adheres to the scheduling and completion of work assignments through the work order system. Maintains accurate work
order records and completes paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Defines and describes materials, tools, equipment, work methods, and task
sequences.Participates in safety and other trainings as required. Performs all job duties in adherence to all University and Departmental
safety guidelines.
