Indiana University (IU) Public Safety pursues the university’s commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety

and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees areas including the IU Police
Department, Emergency Management and Continuity, and Fire Safety and Loss Prevention, operating with a team of approximately 300 dedicated
staff on a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Provides supervision and management for Loss Control Inspectors.
• Conducts
  fire code inspections to ensure compliance with all State of Indiana adopted Fire, Building Codes, and National Fire Protection Association
  (NFPA) Standards.
• Conducts training classes for students, faculty, and staff on fire prevention subjects as requested.
• Responds to emergencies on the campuses as needed, providing fire alarm and suppression system support to local responders.
• Reviews construction documents and participates in plan review for fire code issues during new construction phase and major renovation
  projects.
• Manages the overall fire prevention effort for assigned campuses.
• Tracks and oversees all IU construction,
  renovation, and capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes, university standards, and loss
  prevention objectives.
• Reviews project plans with project managers, architects, engineers, contractors and campus stakeholders
  concerning specifications for fire protection systems, including fire alarm systems, automatic sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire pumps,
  smoke control systems, emergency voice/alarm communication systems, emergency power, and other fire and life safety features.
• Conducts or oversees acceptance test and/or annual testing for fire safety systems.
• Provides management and oversight of Loss
  Prevention functions, programs, and policies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

General
Responsibilities

• Provides day-to-day supervision and management of fire code inspectors, conducts inspections, conducts
  training classes, and responds to emergencies.
• Serves in an advisory capacity to campus administration for code issues; performs
  building inspections to ensure compliance with all state of Indiana adopted fire, building codes and NFPA standards; resolves code issues
  during construction phase, and maintenance issues.
• Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements
  solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency; may perform and plan review for new construction and participate as part of
  design team with the University Architect’s Office.
• Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes
  work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
• Ensures adequate staffing and effective
  scheduling; contributes to and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
• Provides direct supervision and oversight of
  assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
• Develops and
  maintains fire prevention plans; conducts training classes for students, faculty and staff on fire prevention subjects as requested;
  maintains records of training and certification.
• Researches and stays up-to-date on new or updated applicable statutes, rules,
  regulations, as well as best practices and emerging technologies; keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant
  problems.

education.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably in fire science, public
  safety, or a related field).

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 2 years fire and/or building
  code inspection/enforcement and/or fire safety related experience.

Preferred

• 5 years
  supervisory/management experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

• Valid driver’s
  license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
• Indiana Certified Fire Inspector I and II
  Certifications upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a
computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an
office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an
accommodation.

Periodic work hours outside of normal working hours, including nights and weekends, is required.

Extensive
travel among the campuses may be required.

Salary

Up to $70,337.76 annually, depending upon qualifications.
