Job Description
The Mechanical
and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at Missouri S&T is hiring a Machinist to support the upcoming launch of the new Missouri
Protoplex. This is a collaborative role with Missouri S&T and Missouri Protoplex industrial tenants. You will work alongside university
staff, students, and industry partners on a variety of projects ranging from student lab support to industrial prototype fabrication. This
position is ideal for someone who enjoys a “hands-on” environment where the daily tasks shift between manual machining, operating advanced
CNC systems, and assisting with equipment upkeep.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shop Operations:
Set up and operate manual and CNC machine tools (milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, welders) to produce parts for department
laboratories and Missouri Protoplex projects. - Advanced Equipment Support: Work alongside a wide range of teams to
learn and operate sophisticated machinery, including Wire EDM, Friction Stir processing, DMG Mori hybrid systems, thermal spray systems, and
others. - Machine Maintenance: Assist in the tracking and execution of routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and
“upkeep” of shop equipment to ensure everything in the Protoplex stays operational. - Collaborative Fabrication:
Help manufacture custom parts, assemble components, and check the operation of completed sub-assemblies based on designs provided by
faculty, engineers, and industrial partners. - Student Instruction: Spend a portion of the time providing hands-on
instruction to students in various engineering courses per the direction of the Missouri Protoplex staff ensuring everyone follows shop
safety protocols.
Shift
Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be
acquired is necessary - Four years actual work experience and training which may include equivalent of apprenticeship or completion of
vocational training in trade - Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, and wiring diagrams
- Skill in maintenance and use
of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade
Preferred Qualifications
- Two-year college or
technical degree in machine tool technology (or equivalent experience) - Experience with manual machine operation and CNC
programming/operation - Ability to lift at least 40 pounds for show set up and material handling
- At least one year of
experience in prototype fabrication - Experience or interest in performing preventative maintenance on machine tools
- Strong
communication skills for working within a multi-team environment (University & Industry) - Prior experience in a teaching or
mentoring shop environment is a plus
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this
position has been established as $20.49-$27.48 hourly.
Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to,
the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
