Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College is seeking a dedicated, full-time Film Equipment Room Manager to oversee our film program’s comprehensive equipment facility and support film production students and faculty. This position supports the coordination of professional-grade cinema equipment, maintaining inventory systems, managing reservations of sound stages, managing purchasing & maintenance of equipment and ensuring students and faculty have access to the tools needed for successful film production. The ideal candidate will combine knowledge of current cinema technology with strong organizational and educational skills. This position reports to the Associate Dean of the Department of Performing Arts and requires flexibility to support evening/weekend film shoots when needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities


Film Equipment Management & Operations:

  • Manage and supervise daily checkout and returns of camera packages, lighting, grip equipment, sound equipment, etc.; including verifying equipment functionality after returns.
  • Perform routine maintenance and coordinate repairs with faculty or vendors as appropriate for professional cinema equipment including digital cinema cameras, prime/zoom lenses, professional audio recorders, and grip and electric.
  • Implement and manage digital checkout systems for tracking equipment and inventory; Support student and faculty with system usage.
  • Help Faculty maintain camera build guides, audio recording workflows, and training materials for student, faculty, and/or professional productions on-campus.
  • Oversee reservations and usage for students, faculty, and professional productions in two sound stages, including an LED Volume for Virtual Production.

Administrative & Financial Management:


  • Provide administrative support for equipment-related purchasing and budget tracking, following faculty and department guidance; including but not limited to Perkins Grants, Informed Budget Process, Donations, etc.
  • Conduct regular equipment inventory and manage yearly asset reports.
  • Process invoices for equipment repairs and rentals along with the division office staff.
  • Research and communicate with film equipment vendors regarding purchases and repairs.
  • Track and maintain insurance documentation for high-value cinema equipment.
  • Manage equipment room staff, including training on proper handling of cinema gear.
  • Maintain relationships with local rental houses for supplemental equipment needs.
  • Maintain SLCC safety policies & procedures relevant to the equipment room & film studio spaces including but not limited to; lighting safety, fire code, and chemicals.

Film Production Support:

  • Provide support to faculty and students through equipment set-up for courses and on-campus productions; answering student questions about film equipment.
  • Support faculty in training students on professional cinema equipment including camera builds, lighting setups, and sound recording.
  • Conduct training sessions on specialized film equipment (Steadicam, camera cranes, wireless follow focus systems, etc.) when needed.
  • Assist students with technical aspects of their film projects.
  • Provide troubleshooting support for digital workflows including camera formats, audio syncing, and data management.
  • Consult with student filmmakers on equipment packages for their productions.
  • Support film screening events and special productions as needed.

Technical Knowledge


  • Extensive knowledge of current digital cinema cameras (RED, Sony, Canon, Black Magic).
  • Experience with professional cinema lighting and grip equipment.
  • Understanding of professional audio recording equipment and workflows.
  • Proficiency in digital asset management systems.
  • Knowledge of cinema post-production workflows.
  • Understanding of safe handling procedures for professional film equipment.
  • An understanding of Virtual Production and LED Walls is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull production equipment up to 80 pounds.
  • Capable of standing and moving equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at heights on ladders when needed for lighting setups.

  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Film Production or related field.
  • 2 years of film/ video industry experience.
  • Knowledge of current film industry standards and practices.


OR

  • Associates Degree in Film Production or related field.
  • 4+ years of direct experience in equipment management for film productions.
  • Knowledge of current film industry standards and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of film production experience.
  • Experience in an educational environment.
  • Experience with LED Volume and/or Virtual Production.
