Posting Description

MECHANIC B, Research Laboratory of Electronics, will be responsible for providing a broad range of facilities, maintenance, and technical support services across laboratory, office, classroom, and conference environments, which may include assisting faculty, researchers, students, and staff. Such duties include, but are not limited to assembling, building, constructing, disassembling, fabricating, installing, maintaining, modifying, receiving, relocating, repairing, and unpacking furniture, fixtures, equipment, specialized items, laboratory equipment, research apparatus, office furniture, and related infrastructure. Will maintain laboratories, offices, conference rooms, shops, storage areas, common spaces, tools, equipment, and vehicles in a clean, safe, and organized condition, which may include minor repairs, painting, and other miscellaneous facility improvements; set up, arrange, and break down conference rooms, classrooms, and event spaces for meetings, seminars, conferences, and special events; and transport materials, supplies, and equipment between facilities, which may involve driving departmental vehicles.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: A minimum of three years of relevant experience; High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with faculty, students, researchers, and administrative staff; strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities; ability to prioritize multiple assignments and work independently with minimal supervision; the ability to work collaboratively within a small team of dedicated facilities professionals; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; a commitment to workplace safety; professionalism and confidentiality; demonstrated experience with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment; experience moving and installing heavy equipment and furnishings; and the ability to read and follow technical instructions, diagrams, and work orders, while the Institute also prefers candidates with experience supporting laboratory or research facilities, carpentry and general construction techniques, maintaining departmental vehicles and equipment, and setting up conference or event spaces.

Working Conditions: Will be required to conduct indoor and outdoor work, handle objects weighing up to 50 lbs which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling, engage in activities such as assembling, moving, operating, or demonstrating machinery, tools, furniture, supplies, and equipment, perform tasks that may require standing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, or other physical movements for extended periods, reach at, above, and below shoulder level, ascend and descend stairs, scaffolding, or ladders, work in confined spaces for extended periods, operate a range of tools and equipment including those requiring fine motor skills (e.g., cutting tools, soldering irons, keyboards), seize, hold, grasp, turn, and manipulate objects with hands and fingers including the use of a keyboard and other standard office equipment, and drive departmental vehicles.
