Overview

The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.


Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Parking Senior General Maintenance Worker/Sign Maker for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of a supervisor or senior sign crafter, this position performs general maintenance duties and assists with a wide range of computerized sign-making tasks. The supervisor or senior sign crafter prioritizes assignments, ensures timely completion, and verifies that all work meets University specifications.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:


  • Fabricates and installs metal signage using basic hand tools, manually sizes and affixes graphics and borders to signs, and operates computerized graphics equipment to produce sign letters, logos, symbols, and other graphic designs in accordance with University standards.
  • The worker cuts and applies letters and emblems, paints, maintains, and replaces signage and signage poles, and fabricates brackets as needed.
  • Responsibilities also include repairing, maintaining, and cleaning signage equipment, as well as lubricating shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys, and other machine parts.
  • The role may involve setting up, operating, and maintaining equipment such as hand, table, universal, radial, and swing saws, planes, joiners, and shapers.
  • Additionally, the worker performs general grounds maintenance duties, including snow removal, and assists with custodial tasks such as trash removal, cleaning, and dusting.
  • Preventive maintenance and minor repairs are conducted regularly, along with maintaining cleanliness of the shop and work areas.
  • The worker is expected to identify and report faulty equipment operation or questionable conditions to the supervisor and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience


  • High school/vocational school education or its equivalent, and approximately one year experience in signage and general maintenance work including electrical and mechanical repair.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license and two years driving experience.
  • Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
