Indiana University (IU) Campus Bus Service has been
providing bus service on the Bloomington campus since 1966. IU Bloomington’s 1,940-acre campus is often considered one of the most beautiful
campuses in the nation located in USA Today’s #2 “Best College Town in America.” IU Bloomington is home to close to 43,000 undergraduate and
graduate students and over 19,000 faculty, staff, and part-time employees.
Campus Bus provides transportation to over 3 million
rides a year and operates a 6-route system with approximately 30 buses, 50 bus operators, 4 mechanics, and a management team. It has a
long-standing partnership with the local transit system, further extending its reach and resources. Campus Bus is an essential campus
service that supports the university’s ability to function efficiency and helps to ensure a welcoming environment for its students,
employees, and other guests.
Campus Bus is a business unit within Auxiliary Business Services (ABS). ABS operates in a shared
services model that supports finance, human resources, payroll, and marketing needs of Campus Bus.
Job
Summary
- Ensures that all work assignments are filled by a bus operator. If a report operator is not available to drive the
bus operator’s work assignment, drives until a replacement driver can report for duty. - Monitors, on a continuous basis, radio and
responds to bus operators who need assistance. - Documents any schedule changes to the appropriate daily sheet and ensures accuracy of
all information. - Maintains positive customer relations with passengers and other members of the University community both in-person
and on the phone. - Ensures that all bus operators assigned to their supervision will comply with all University, local, state, and
federal laws, rules, and regulations applicable to public transportation operations. - Monitors the safety and mechanical operation of
the buses assigned for service. - Directs bus operators to fill out a physical timecard which is the paper backup for the Time System
in the event that the Time System is not working. - Performs other related duties as may be assigned by Campus Bus
Management.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or
equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Valid driver’s
license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University. - Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and Air
Brake Endorsement within 6 months from date of hire. - Completion of the bus operator training program prior to operating a bus in
regular service. - Ability to pass and maintain United States (US) Department of Transportation (DOT) medical
certification..
SKILLS
Required
- Ability to effectively communicate and exchange
information. - Ability to read a map.
- Knowledge of the service area.
- Ability to work in a safe and efficient
manner. - Ability to obtain thorough knowledge of transit operations, including DOT rules and regulations.
Working
Conditions / Demands
This position spends most time working in an office. Exposure to occasional adverse environmental conditions
such as heat, cold, and inclement weather may occur. The role requires the ability to detect details of objects and the ability to move
objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an
accommodation.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test, and subject to continuing alcohol and drug testing as
mandated by the Federal Transit Administration.
Must be available to work day or night shifts.
