Job Description
The Program Manager serves as the operational leader of the SMART Lab, a 324-computer academic support center serving ~6,000 undergraduate math students per academic year, and is responsible for developing and executing effective programs, services, and operations aligned with departmental priorities. This position manages student staffing, program implementation, data-informed assessment, and operational excellence. The
Program Manager works closely with the Director to advance departmental goals and exercises significant initiative, judgment, and leadership in developing and managing the day-to-day functions of the SMART Lab.
Salary Range: $58,000 – $63,000 Annually
Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead the daily operations of the SMART Lab, ensuring high-quality program delivery, staff performance, and student experience within a high-volume academic support environment.
- Provide day-to-day operational leadership and direction to professional staff responsible for implementing SMART Lab services and initiatives, ensuring consistent communication, coordination, and execution.
- Develop, improve, document, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and workflows to support operational efficiency, consistency, and continuity while ensuring alignment with departmental priorities and compliance with institutional requirements.
- Manage student staffing budget allocations, payroll processes, and related resources within established budget parameters and institutional policies.
Student Staff Leadership and Development
- Directly supervise approximately 50 student employees, including managing their recruitment, hiring, onboarding, scheduling, training, coaching, performance management, and evaluation with support from professional staff.
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of staff training and professional development programs focused on student development, transferable skills, accountability, and program excellence.
Assessment, Data, and Technology Management
- Collect, manage, and analyze programmatic and operational data to evaluate
effectiveness, identify trends, monitor key performance indicators, and drive data informed
decision-making. - Develop and maintain reports, dashboards, and assessment tools that provide insights into program operations, utilization, staffing, and student engagement.
- Serve as the operational lead for instructional technologies and software platforms that support SMART Lab services, ensuring effective implementation, utilization, and continuous improvement.
Program Development
- Identify opportunities to enhance student learning, engagement, and success through the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of programs, services, and operational practices.
- Research emerging trends and best practices in learning support and student success and use findings to develop new initiatives within the SMART Lab.
- Collaborate with faculty, leadership, and other stakeholders to ensure SMART Lab services and initiatives effectively address evolving student needs, support student success, and advance departmental and institutional priorities.
Other Duties
- Represent the SMART Lab through outreach activities, presentations, orientations, and collaborative initiatives as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental and institutional priorities.
Schedule: Work schedule will be determined in coordination with the Director and offers options for flexibility within SMART Lab hours of operation: Monday-Thursday 9:00 AM-9:00 PM, Friday 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, and Sunday 1:00 PM-5:00 PM. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience.
- Degree Equivalency Clause: Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree.

* SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements
* A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:
* (a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;
* (b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree;
* (c) Six years of direct experience for a master’s degree;
* (d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or
* (e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree
* Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure, certification, or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
* Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, Mathematics Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Assessment and Evaluation, Educational Program Development, or a closely related field.
- Experience in a learning support or student success environment with responsibility for operational management, student staff supervision, program or service development, and data management.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience utilizing data visualization, reporting, or business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI) to support assessment and decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, sound judgment, and follow-through, with strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
