Job DescriptionThe Department of Public Safety serves the Creighton community through proactive patrolling, rapid
response, outreach, security technology, and safe transportation. Our goal is to create a secure environment for all community members. The
team consists of 3 shift managers, 3 lead officers, 18 unarmed and armed officers, and 6 dispatchers. Public Safety is responsible for
campus security, enforcement, emergency management, campus safety, and parking on the Omaha Campus.

Officers protect life and
property, demonstrating integrity, community engagement, and sound judgment under pressure. They respond to emergency and non-emergency
calls, apply crime prevention techniques, and conduct investigations using surveillance and access records. Officers handle fire and
security alarms, provide first aid, engage with students, enforce parking regulations, and assist with vehicle issues. They may also take on
dispatcher duties or other assignments as needed.

Armed Officers Only: While the core duties and essential
functions of a Public Safety Officer role are similar for armed and unarmed officers, those who work in an armed capacity will be
responsible for safely and securely maintaining and carrying a university-owned firearm and complying with Federal, State and Local laws in
addition to the department standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing the use of force.


  • Patrol campus areas by vehicle, bike, or
    on foot, assisting University students, employees, and visitors, responding quickly to emergency threats. Enforce parking violations, secure
    buildings and unlock as needed, and provide motorists with jump starts and other vehicle assistance. Respond to fire and security alarms,
    providing first aid and initial situational assessment until local fire and rescue first responders arrive.
  • Respond to service
    calls and incidents to resolve problems. Conduct original and follow-up investigations, using video surveillance, access control records and
    other resources to gather fact and resolve incidents. Document incidents that occur timely and appropriately within the system.
  • Engage with students, faculty and staff in formal and informal settings to foster positive relationships.
  • Armed
    Officers Only:
    In addition to the essential functions stated above, armed officers will maintain competencies for firearms use,
    including mandatory trainings and frequent cleaning of firearm on a continual and consistent basis.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years
    of work-related experience preferred; campus law enforcement/security department or emergency service agency preferred. Additional education
    may be substituted for experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a position requiring interpersonal, human relations, or customer
    service skills and high public interaction.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

In addition to the required Education and
Experience stated above, all Officers will require successful completion of a pre-employment screening process which includes:


  • a
    criminal background check
  • motor vehicle report,
  • drug screen
  • medical /physical exam
  • psychological testing
    and evaluation

Armed Officers: must complete firearms training annually and qualify to carry a semi-automatic
pistol by meeting the standard mandated by the Nebraska State Qualification Course.

Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities:


  • Knowledge of security operations, safety practices, and enforcement procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant
    equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, property, and
    facilities.
  • Armed Officers must be knowledgeable with firearms usage and cleaning techniques.
  • Ability to self-start and
    self-supervise daily tasks, sometimes under stressful, volatile, or confusing situations.
  • Strong customer service skills with the
    ability to critically assess inquiries and provide appropriate information or resolution using judgment and available resources.
  • Ability to react calmly during emergency situations to relay information to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to coordinate and
    prioritize work with multiple and conflicting demands in a fast-paced stressful environment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply
    University policies and applicable federal laws, including VAWA, FERPA, HIPAA, and the Clery Act.
  • Ability to remain professional
    with a diverse group of individuals, including faculty, staff, students, guests, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain
    confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Word and Outlook. Ability to learn to use incident reporting software to produce accurate reports of
    incidents.
  • Ability to communicate concisely and coherently with callers, responding officers, other University officials, and local
    first responders.
  • Ability to exercise strong verbal communication skills, including voice enunciation, projection, articulation,
    control, and command. Must project a voice compatible in tone and diction with radio and telephone systems.
  • Must be able to work
    any of the three operational shifts, or for a specific time period, to meet University/Department needs.
  • Must be able to stand or
    walk for extended periods of time, respond quickly on foot or in a vehicle, and work in inclement weather conditions, with potential
    exposure to danger.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Possess, for at least two years, a valid United States
    driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles from the Vehicle Operator state of residence. Must have a clean driving
    record
  • CPR and first aid (training provided).
  • Armed officers must annually qualify to carry a
    semi-automatic pistol by meeting the standard mandated by the Nebraska State Qualification Course.
