Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, three years of directly related experience, possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage with the University of South Alabama. Must obtain Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification within six months of employment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Current Hazardous Materials CDL is preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s department of Safety & Environmental Compliance is seeking to hire a Safety & Environmental Compliance Specialist I. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
- Assists with daily TS&D (treatment, storage & disposal) facility operations for hazardous waste.
- Collects, packages, tests, stores, transports and/or disposes of hazardous and universal waste materials in coordination with other departmental personnel.
- Represents the department in the absences of the Director or Emergency Management/Safety Coordinator to include mitigation of hazardous materials incidents and to fully direct response activities, if needed.
- Performs routine biological and/or chemical sampling for potential exposure and regulatory compliance.
- Assists with chemical fume hood and biosafety cabinet testing and certification program.
- Assists with post laboratory closure operations.
- Records hazardous materials data for statistical analyses and reports.
- Assists in reported laboratory accidents, incident/accident investigations, and cleanup as needed.
- Performs any additional activity necessary to protect the health and safety of the University Community to include the authority of intervention in matters of imminent danger and department regulatory oversight.
- May on occasion be required to perform “Confined Space Entry” environmental monitoring.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required, including respond to after-hour emergencies.
- Related duties as required.
