Roxbury Community College (RCC) is a public institution of higher education offering associate degrees, certificate programs and lifelong learning opportunities to the Greater Boston community. Job Description:


Title: SQL Developer (Contract)

Department: Office of Information Technology


Reports to: Enterprise Data Architect

Contract: 6-12 months



Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Location: 4-days On-site in Roxbury, MA, 1 day remote.


Anticipated Start date: September 2026

Key Responsibilities


  • Query and report development: Write, optimize, and maintain SQL queries, views, and stored procedures. Build recurring and ad hoc reports and data extracts for Enrollment, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Academic Affairs, and Institutional Research.
  • Data quality and cleanup: Identify and resolve duplicate, incomplete, and inconsistent records. Build validation scripts and reconciliation reports across Jenzabar, Slate, and Active Directory.
  • Integration support: Support the automated Slate-to-Jenzabar applicant integration, including exception reporting, record-matching logic, and reconciliation of records that fail to process.
  • Compliance and institutional reporting: Build and maintain the data extracts behind federal and state reporting obligations, including IPEDS and U.S. Department of Education requirements, and support KPI reporting for institutional leadership.
  • Access and security: Implement database access and permission changes within established controls, and handle student and financial data in accordance with FERPA, GLBA, and College policy.
  • Documentation: Document queries, data definitions, report logic, and operating procedures. Written documentation is a core deliverable of this role, not an afterthought.
  • AI-assisted development: Use Claude or comparable AI tools to accelerate query drafting, refactoring, code review, and documentation, while independently verifying and testing all output before it reaches


Requirements:


Qualifications

  • Two to three years of hands-on, in-depth SQL development experience.
  • Strong command of T-SQL or PL/SQL, including complex joins, common table expressions, window functions, aggregation, and set-based logic.
  • Demonstrated ability to tune queries and read execution plans.
  • Experience working directly against a transactional system to build reports and extracts.
  • Ability to read a data model, trace a field back to its source, and reason about how records move between systems.
  • Comfort working with non-technical staff to turn a business request into a clear specification, including asking the questions that surface unstated requirements.
  • Consistent documentation habits and disciplined version control of scripts.
  • Practical experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude, with sound judgment about when to rely on generated output and how to verify it.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in higher education, particularly with Jenzabar J1 or a comparable student information system.
  • Familiarity with Slate or related CRM and its data structures.
  • Experience with reporting tools such as SSRS, Power BI, or a reports server.
  • Scripting in Python or PowerShell for data movement and automation.
  • Exposure to cloud-hosted database environments, including Google Cloud.
  • Understanding of FERPA and GLBA obligations around student and financial data.

Additional Information:



First 90 Days:

A successful contractor in this role will, within the first ninety days, take over recurring report production from existing staff, complete an initial pass at reconciling exception records from the Slate-to-Jenzabar integration, and leave behind documented, runnable queries for each report they own.
