Position Summary:

This position is responsible for stacks management and coordinating the Front Desk service at Huie Library, on the campus of Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR. A successful applicant must be able to supervise, schedule, and coordinate student workers to assist in these duties. This position requires a significant level of functional independence and will support the various processes and operations of the Access and Collection Management unit. Flexibility to work on varied shifts is required; this includes afternoon, evening, and weekend work.



Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage stacks on all three floors of Huie Library. This includes shelving physical materials and training, supervising, and tracking student workers’ operation of the Digby app; running circulation reports from the integrated library system and gate software; and coordinating information from Digby app with inventorying the library’s collections. Send biweekly reports to the librarian.
  • Participates in student worker hiring. Trains, supervises, schedules, coaches, evaluates, and coordinates the duties of student workers. Maintain communication with Financial Aid Regarding student worker eligibility.
  • Learn the circulation module of the library management system; train and assist student workers in overseeing the library front desk, explaining policies and procedures, and circulating materials. Observe student worker/patron interaction and intervene when necessary to address conflict and/or to provide clarification relates to policies and procedures. Coach student workers to communicate with clarity and tact.
  • Communicate with the librarians on policy, patron, and staffing issues.
  • Visually inspect all three floors of the library daily to ensure the physical collections and facility maintenance are in good order. Identify and report problems with the facilities (i.e. burned-out light bulbs, water leaks, etc.).
  • Provide limited assistance with using the library catalog and databases; provide directions to library materials and spaces. Refer questions beyond training to a professional librarian.
  • Assume responsibility for the library when librarians are not on duty. This may include notifying and communicating with Campus Security, directing patrons to the basement shelter during weather events, or evacuating the building during an emergency. Report in writing unusual incidents or violations of regulations to supervisor.
  • Work with librarians to maintain archives and special collections by scanning, sorting, organizing, or describing materials as needed. Assist in training and supervising student workers to scan and describe materials as needed.
  • Assist staff in other areas as needed; perform other duties and projects as assigned.

– Ability to anticipate and quickly adapt to any potential problems in the library.
– Experience working successfully under pressure, meeting deadlines, and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships.
– Ability to operate office equipment.
– Experience providing quality customer service.
– Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy; typing, spelling, grammar, and proofreading competency.
– Ability to work independently, organize your own work, and coordinate the work activities of others.
– Willingness to maintain skills through active participation in continuing training opportunities.

Physical Demands:


– To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. – Must have the physical stamina to work long hours, including evenings.
– Must be able to lift and carry equipment and/or materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
– Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach.
– Must be able to use a computer keyboard and other office/library equipment.
– Must have vision to read print on paper or on screen.
– Must have hearing to communicate in person or on the phone.

General Days/Hours:



Hours may and can vary include pre-opening hours as needed. A typical week is Th, F, S, S, M from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M., but times may vary according to Huie Library needs and the academic schedule.


Other:

Minimum Qualifications:

– An earned high school diploma or equivalent
– A minimum of three years of relevant work experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
– Supervisory and training experience are a plus but not required.
– Experience working with academic databases; Ability to learn and use a variety of computer software applications with training.
