Job Description:


Farmingdale State College is seeking an Aviation Safety Officer. The Aviation Safety Officer is responsible for the development, implementation, control and maintenance of the Farmingdale State College Aviation Center Safety Program, also known as the Safety Management System (SMS). The Aviation Safety Officer reports to Aviation Center Director.

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide information and advice on flight and maintenance safety matters to the Aviation Center Director and to ensure follow through on implementation.


Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate excellent safety behavior and attitude; follow regulatory practices and rules; recognize and promote hazard reporting; and ensure effective safety reporting.
  • Model and promote an organizational culture that fosters safety practices through effective leadership.
  • Act as an information conduit to bring safety issues to the attention of management and to deliver safety information to the organization’s staff, contractors and stakeholders.
  • Provide and clearly articulate information regarding safety issues throughout the organization.
  • Develop and maintain the Farmingdale State College Aviation Center Safety Program (SMS).
  • Publish and maintain the Safety Management System Manual, including the Emergency Procedures Manual.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of the hazard identification, safety risk assessment, and the organization’s SMS.
  • Stay trained and informed regarding changes in the development of SMS in General Aviation and FAR Part 141 operations.
  • Liaise with the Chief Flight Instructor (CCFI), the Director of Maintenance (DOM), and Aviation Center staff on safety matters.
  • Represent the FSC Aviation Center on safety matters to key government agencies and select aviation organizations and industry stakeholders (e.g. FAA, FSDO, Republic Airport, NTSB etc.).
  • Analyze technical data to identify trends related to hazards, events, and occurrences.
  • Measure the effectiveness of processes and seek continual improvement in the quality of Aviation Center operations.
  • Maintain the air safety occurrence database, currently the Baldwin Aviation Safety Management System.
  • Serve as Chair of the Aviation Center Safety Committee, including arranging meetings and maintaining meeting records.
  • Conduct the monthly Safety Meeting and maintain records of those meetings.
  • Conduct the flight student and Aviation Center staff Safety Stand Down each semester and maintain records of such meetings.
  • Assist with the investigation of accidents or incidents involving flight operations or aircraft maintenance, including coordinating and conducting investigations as required.
  • Conduct safety audits and inspections as required.
  • Serve in the Operations Area as Dispatcher, as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Aviation Center Director.

Nights, Weekends, and Holiday work may be required depending on departmental needs and operational circumstances.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Previous experience in an aviation safety program.
  • Familiarity with FAA Safety Management Systems requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • FAA Flight Instructor Certification.
  • Previous experience as an Aviation Safety Officer in a Part 141 Flight School.
  • FAA Airframe and/or Powerplant certifications.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time UUP position.


  • For the first 10 working days, beginning Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and ending Monday, May 11, 2026, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.

  • SALARY: $80,000+ $4,000 in downstate location pay = $84,000 Total Compensation. Salary may increase commensurate with experience.
