Posting Summary
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Ensure all field work is performed by assigned staff in accordance with relevant regulations, standards and direction of the Assistant Director.
- Attend construction meetings to ensure the department and university requirements related to fire systems are incorporated in design.
- Perform site visits with Fire Systems staff to assist in troubleshooting, determining proper course of action to test or repair systems, meet with contractors or vendors when external resources are required to obtain estimates or oversee the performance of contracted vendors.
- Review reports submitted by field staff for completeness and accuracy and provide feedback to staff when necessary.
- Perform inspection, testing and maintenance of fire systems as assigned by the Assistant Director.
- Maintain accurate inventory of Fire Systems Bureau repair stock when necessary.
- Order stock as necessary with the Asst. Director’s approval.
- May be required to work nights and/or weekends as directed for system issues or event stand by services.
- May be required to carry a department issued cell phone to answer after hours service calls to determine if a technician response is required.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science Technology (or related field) and a minimum of five (5) years demonstrated experience in fire systems inspection, testing and maintenance or an equivalent level of education/experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Candidates will be required to complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Must currently possess and maintain One of the following certifications (Dual certification is preferred):
- NJ Division of Fire Safety Fire Protection Contractor-Fire Sprinkler certification
- NJ Division of Fire Safety Fire Protection Contractor-Fire Alarm certification Either of the above is mandatory for entry into the position as well as to continue in the position and a working knowledge of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- This position requires a documented background in performing inspections, testing and maintenance of Fire systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- NJ Division of Fire Safety Fire Protection Contractor-Fire Sprinkler certification
- NJ Division of Fire Safety Fire Protection Contractor-Fire Alarm certification.
Equipment Utilized
- Must be familiar with computerized inspection tracking systems, various fire system maintenance equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- This position requires extensive walking, climbing of stairs and ladders, traversing narrow runways and catwalks, and reaching roof areas of buildings.
- Also required is the continuation of inspection task in all types of weather, in potentially unsafe conditions and other related tasks as assigned.
