Essential Job Duties:
The IT Network Administrator I is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations, implementation, maintenance, and configuration of the core campus network infrastructure. This includes supporting wired and wireless networks, VPN, IPAM and other critical network services. The position will also serve as a primary operational resource for managing campus-wide installation and other projects, updating internal processes, and collaborating with our software development team to optimize network tool performance. This position will also conduct monthly software vulnerability assessments.



Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions


1. Planning, Organizing, & Project Support


  • Project Management & Installation: Oversee project tracking for network installation work, monitoring timelines, and ensuring milestones are achieved systematically.
  • Campus Consulting & Support: Provide technical information to campus partners regarding ComTech-provided connectivity solutions, DNS/DHCP services, and specialized network options to support campus business operations.
  • Process Improvement: Proactively review, update, and document internal operational procedures and templates to maximize team efficiency.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Liaison directly with the software and development team to ensure operational tools are used effectively, recommending updates based on live workflow demands.

Technical Knowledge & Infrastructure Deployment

  • Equipment Configuration & Deployment: Configure, test, and install networking hardware, switches, routers, and wireless access points in strict compliance with approved architecture, engineering designs, and vendor best practices.
  • Network Administration: Administer subnetting, IP addressing, and VLAN assignments within the network address management system.
  • Maintenance & On-Call Coverage: Participate in a week-long rotating 24/7 on-call support shift to handle after-hours critical network alerts. Commit to planned before/after-hours maintenance windows to minimize daytime disruption to the university.

Technical Support & Incident Management


  • Issue Resolution: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex wired/wireless connectivity issues, hardware disruptions, and telephony/data performance degradations across campus.
  • Escalation Handling: Actively monitor network monitoring systems, verify problem resolution, and escalate critical or broad-impact campus outages to senior engineers or management when outside standard operating boundaries.

This position is open only for current and permanent NC State Employees.

Other Work/Responsibilities:


  • One week on-call shift required

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with zero – two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.


Required Qualifications:

  • Solid working knowledge of core networking principles including the OSI model, TCP/IP, subnets, routing protocols, VLANs, and wireless layers
  • Experience utilizing enterprise ticketing workflows (ideally ServiceNow) and network performance monitoring software
  • Experience with equipment lifecycle refresh workflows
  • Position requires good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrate the ability to work within a team environment
  • Ability to work independently on tasks, develop own work schedule and monitor progress against defined parameters

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with Cisco DNA or other equipment automation and configuration solutions
  • Experience with network equipment vulnerability and risk assessment
  • CCNA or 3-4 years equivalent experience with university network infrastructures
  • 2-3 years project management experience

Required License or Certification:

  • A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
