Overview



The E. V. Smith Research Center in Shorter, Alabama is seeking candidates for Agriculture Technician positions to perform basic level farm and technical research tasks related to beef cattle in support of ongoing research activities.

Responsibilities


  • General farm and cattle duties.
  • Performing day-to-day animal husbandry tasks such as providing food and water.
  • Cleaning animal enclosures and facilities.
  • Assisting with breeding procedures, and maintaining proper research data.
  • Observing animals, as well as identifying and reporting concerns about their health status or well being.
  • Performing general maintenance on equipment, buildings, and fences.
  • Operating equipment such as tractors, feed mixers, fence sprayers, etc.

Duties are often required to be performed in inclement weather in all seasons and occasionally on holidays and weekends.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Level I: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of experience in farming practices.
  • Level III: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in farming practices.
  • Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 years of experience in farming practices.
  • A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection is required.

Desired qualifications include current CDL and experience working with cattle.


SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED FOR EXPERIENCE: Yes, When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
