Position Summary


Parking and Transportation Services at the University at Buffalo is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and forward-thinking Associate Director of Fleet Services to provide leadership and oversight for the University’s fleet operations and transportation asset management programs.

This is an opportunity to shape the future of how one of the region’s leading public research universities manages, operates, and modernizes its fleet. The Associate Director will develop and implement a comprehensive fleet strategy that supports university operations, regulatory compliance, fiscal stewardship, sustainability initiatives, and customer service excellence.



Reporting to the Director of Parking & Transportation Services (or designee), the Associate Director will provide strategic and institutional leadership for fleet planning, vehicle lifecycle management, maintenance programs, fleet procurement, utilization analysis, and vehicle electrification initiatives. The position will serve as the University’s subject matter expert in fleet operations, transportation asset management, and fleet sustainability, using data, emerging technologies, and innovative approaches to improve fleet performance, efficiency, and long-term value.

The Associate Director will provide institutional leadership for a fleet portfolio supporting multiple campuses and diverse operational units, while advancing university-wide fleet governance and sustainability objectives. This position will collaborate with departments and operational units across the University to establish best practices, optimize fleet resources, identify opportunities for innovation, and support the University’s evolving transportation and sustainability goals.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Direct university fleet operations, including vehicle acquisition, assignment, utilization, replacement, and disposal
  • Operate University fleet vehicles as necessary to conduct fleet inspections, assess vehicle condition and performance, coordinate maintenance and repairs, respond to operational issues, and support Fleet Services activities.
  • Manage a fleet of roughly 450 vehicles and prepare for emerging mobility needs such as electrification and telematics
  • Develop and implement fleet policies, procedures, standards, and performance measures
  • Develop and maintain fleet replacement plans and asset management strategies
  • Cultivate a fleet services unit that is service-oriented, that strives for continuous improvement, service consistency, and high-quality departmental experience
  • Lead fleet electrification and alternative fuel initiatives
  • Develop and manage fleet operating and capital budgets
  • Ensure compliance with federal, SUNY, university, and state regulations, Including Executive Order 22 (EO22)
  • Oversee a platform for modern mobility solutions, including telematics, shared-use vehicles, fleet management info system, reporting, and analytics
  • Supervise fleet personnel and lead workforce development efforts
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders including but not limited to Facilities, Procurement, Police, Business Services, Resource Management, HR

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of experience in a related field
  • Supervisory or management experience with demonstrated leadership ability
  • Experience with fleet procurement, lifecycle planning, budgeting, and operational planning
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the requirement
  • A valid Class D driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle is required or candidate must otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the position

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in a related field or professional certification with 1 year experience
  • Experience in higher education, government, healthcare, or other complex organizations
  • Experience with fleet electrification and EV infrastructure
  • Professional certification such as CAFM or CPFP

Physical Demands

Salary Range
$85,000 – $95,000
