Job Summary
The Driver Foreperson plans, coordinates, assigns, and supervises transportation and moving operations involving personnel, equipment, supplies, materials and vehicles. The Foreperson provides supervision to Drivers, Heavy Drivers, Driver Sub-Forepersons, and other assigned personnel, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and professionally. This position is responsible for setting expectations, maintaining accountability, and fostering a respectful work environment Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervise and direct Drivers, Heavy Drivers and other assigned personnel, including assigning daily work, monitoring performance, and ensuring work is completed accurately, safely, and on schedule.
- Plan, coordinate, schedule, and distribute work assignments, including estimating time, staffing, equipment, and cost requirements.
- Develop, implement and monitor employee training plans, including onboarding, required certifications, safety practices, and job-specific skills; actively participate in providing hands-on training and coaching to team.
- Provide leadership and maintain a professional, respectful and inclusive work environment, addressing inappropriate conduct and modeling expected behavior at all times.
- Ensure compliance with all safety practices, policies, and procedures related to transportation, moving, and vehicle operation; promote safe work habits and address safety concerns promptly
- Coordinate transportation activities with campus departments and other Facilities & Services units, responding to requests, questions, and operational issues.
- Oversee the loading, unloading, hauling, and transport of equipment, furniture, supplies, materials, refuse, recycling, and freight, ensuring proper handling and efficiency.
- Perform administrative and clerical functions, including record keeping, logs, schedules, reports and basic mathematical calculations related to operations.
- Support employee performance evaluation and accountability, including providing feedback, documenting issues, and recommending corrective or disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Perform duties of other supervisors in their absence and carry out other related duties consistent with the classification.
Work Schedule, Travel, or Other Job Expectations
Working Conditions:
1. Overtime may be required during emergency conditions or periods of increased operational need.
2. Work outside of regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required on a limited basis to meet the operational needs of the University.
3. The incumbent must be able to adjust work hours as necessary based on service demands, special events, or emergency situations.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Working Conditions:
1. This position involves both sedentary and active work. The incumbent must be physically capable of performing the duties of a Driver and Heavy Driver, as operationally required.
2. The position may involve exposure to seasonal weather conditions, including sun, wind, heat, cold, dampness, snow, and ice.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid current driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois; and a CDL class B license or higher in accordance with the size of the vehicle to be operated by the incumbent.
3. Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience in moving or transport activities (such as commercial driving, dispatching, garage work, or moving company).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 1. Knowledge of safety practices related to moving and transportation.
- 2. Knowledge of motor vehicles and auxiliary equipment.
- 3. Ability to supervise and direct staff.
- 4. Ability to learn institutional buildings, travel routes, and physical layout.
- 5. Ability to plan work activities accordingly.
- 6. Ability to perform administrative and record-keeping functions.
- 7. Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Appointment Information
The Driver Foreperson is a 100% full-time Civil Service position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The annual salary for the Driver-Foreperson is $101,439. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
