The Senior Project Machinist I will support the Space Science Center in continuing a decades-long history of producing world-class
space-flight instrumentation. This challenging work requires a broad range of skills that includes experience with various materials
(metals, plastics and ceramics), attention to detail, interactions with team members from a wide variety of backgrounds and creative
problem-solving capabilities. An ability to work well independently is also required. Our current equipment includes 3-axis and 2-axis Proto
Trak milling machines (SMX/DPM3), a Proto Trak CNC lathe (SLX/TRL 1630SX), and manual lathes. Software used is Solidworks and
CAMworks.

Duties/Responsibilities

Machining parts (80%)


  • Work closely with scientists, engineers and
    students to understand requirements and specifications.
  • Develop methods for the fabrication of machined parts.
  • Set up and
    operate machines, including mills, lathes and various other machines to produce high-precision parts.

Inspection
(10%)

  • Inspect finished parts for accuracy and conformity to specifications.
  • Use traditional and advanced inspection
    equipment to ensure that required tolerances have been met.

Routine work (10%)


  • Perform routine maintenance and
    troubleshooting on equipment.
  • Some administrative work (billing, ordering supplies, tool calibration).

Minimum
Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from two-year technical school or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Five
    years’ experience making both fixtures and machined parts for instruments.
  • Experience with Solidworks and
    CAMworks.

Other Requirements:


  • Read and interpret Solidworks models, sketches, drawings as well as verbal
    instructions, understanding that some of the projects require ongoing interactions.
  • Program the CNC machine utilizing the CAMworks
    software.
  • Experience with multiple machines including mills and lathes.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, as
    well as proper housekeeping.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years’ experience in machining, or experience through a
    completed apprentice program.

Compensation Pay
Range:

$47,920.00 – $85,410.00


The pay range for this position is listed above. Actual offer will be based on skills,
