Department Information


Indiana
University (IU) Public Safety pursues IU’s commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community,
consistent with the university’s mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public
Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of
approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.


Job Summary

  • Acts as
    command officer in charge of shift operations; provides training, instruction, evaluation, and supervision of all assigned personnel,
    including work performance for completeness, accuracy, and compliance within established university and departmental
    standards.
  • Responds to calls for assistance from patrol officers and assumes scene command of critical incidents; controls and
    assesses situations, identifies appropriate actions to preserve crime scenes, compiles critical information and coordinates activities with
    other jurisdictions.
  • Maintains shift reports and compiles information to provide to on-coming shift officers; ensures all
    documentation related to investigations and shift reports is accurate and complete.
  • Acts as departmental resource for internal and
    external constituents on law enforcement operations and university policies/procedures; communicates policy and procedure changes,
    implications of new or amended laws, and new techniques/approaches related to law enforcement to leadership/operations
    personnel.
  • Reviews and evaluates current law enforcement practices against campus needs and make recommendations regarding changes
    to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Patrols campus and performs duties of patrol officer as needed; investigates complaints and
    accidents, documents information, maintains records, collects evidence, questions individuals, drafts reports and enters reports in the
    Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS); prepares and serves civil processes; participates in court proceedings,
    administrative hearings and/or quasi-judicial trials; administer aid as a first responder.
  • May be assigned specific detail (such as
    investigations, special events, training, etc.).


Qualifications


EDUCATION


Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field with 3 years of law enforcement experience;
    OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) plus 5 years of law enforcement experience


Preferred

  • Supervisory/leadership experience
  • University law enforcement experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES


Required

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana
    University upon date of hire
  • ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) certified upon date of hire
  • Certifications in university
    required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc. upon date of hire
  • Current firearms qualification and advanced
    knowledge of the use and care of firearms and all other associated law enforcement equipment upon date of hire


Preferred

  • ILETB Certified Instructor upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands


The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary
position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate
objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The
role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well
as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object
is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
