Job Description:
- Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished.
- In-depth working knowledge of police procedures and practices, crime scene operations, fire prevention methods, and the ability to recognize fire hazards.
- Ability to plan, schedule and run departmental trainings (including MPTC Approved in-service and required trainings).
- Develops lesson plans that meet the training objectives of the department and the College in accordance with MPTC and POST commission.
- Maintains all training records on all department personnel.
- Oversee a field training program for newly hired officers.
- Conduct daily roll calls, to include inspection of the daily log, personnel, cruisers, and equipment, as well as addressing any issues, situations, or complaints.
- Ability to motivate subordinates to work effectively, determining the need for disciplinary action and making such a referral.
- Ability to maintain student discipline.
- Ability to walk long hours alone, both indoors and out, under varying climate conditions.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment; maintain a calm manner in stressful situations; make decisions and act quickly in emergency/dangerous situations.
- Ensure that calls for service are handled as promptly and efficiently as possible and not hesitate to personally handle calls if they become backlogged.
- Ability to follow and provide effective oral and written instructions; ability to prepare written reports of investigation; ability to maintain accurate records.
- Review reports, provide necessary feedback to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Ability to apprehend lawbreakers and follow cases through to prosecution.
- Ability to work harmoniously with college staff, students, and the public.
- Assist the department Staff Associate with scheduling (including details).
- Execute the RAVE emergency alerts when necessary, under stressful conditions.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Clery Compliance.
- Serve as backup Court Officer as well as department liaison with other law enforcement agencies.
- Serve as department representative and play an active role as part of the Emergency Management of the department.
- Actively participate in the Accreditation process to include policy review and implementation.
- Provide feedback to the Captain and Deputy Chief regarding officers under your command.
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check).
- Working knowledge of the law of arrest and criminal procedure in lower courts.
- Working knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining in general to the buildings and grounds of a state educational institution.
- Ability to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
Job Requirements:
- Must have completed an approved Police Academy with the ability to be appointed as a Special State Police Officer; achieve and maintain POST Certification.
- Possession of a current, valid operator’s license.
- CPR/First-Aid/AED Certified or ability to become certified.
- Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in a governmental police force or in law enforcement work and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity (experience as a Field Training Officer or OIC will be considered), or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
- An Associate’s degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
- *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified MPTC Instructor in at least one (1) major discipline (E.g., firearms, DT, Active Shooter, CPR, etc.)
- Experience in a higher education environment
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice

Salary: $83,513.30 – $96,032.30 (Grade 19 Step 8 – Step 14)

This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt position. The position is governed by the AFSCME/1067, Council 93 Collective Bargaining Agreement. The agreement outlines the grade and step compensation model with an annual salary range of $67,580.50 – $96,032.30, in adherence with the CBA. This position is a salary grade 19; step is commensurate with training and experience. Shift will either be 7am to 3pm or 1pm to 9pm.
Experienced Officers: Candidates who are currently employed as a police officer with another agency in a bargaining unit with no break in service may be eligible to be placed in a higher salary in accordance with the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.
