About MCC

Metropolitan Community College is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Kansas City, Missouri, founded in 1915 as the Kansas City Polytechnic Institute. The Junior College of Kansas City, as it was known starting in 1919, was one of the first schools in the country to award an associate degree. Today, MCC offers 125 associate degree and certificate programs.



Metropolitan Community College comprises five campuses on the Missouri side of the Greater Kansas City area 47 major buildings and about 550 acres in all: MCC-Blue River, located in Independence, Missouri; MCC-Longview located in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, MCC-Maple Woods located in the Northland of Kansas City, Missouri; MCC-Online and MCC-Penn Valley, located in Midtown Kansas City, Missouri.

MCC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. In addition, several programs have specific accreditations as well.

Job Summary

Incumbents provide support in student account collections and financial aid fund related activities to ensure data accuracy, timely payments and collections, and effective accounting controls.

Essential Functions


  • Review student accounts to detect errors, ensure information accuracy, and identify debt; work may involve utilizing applicable software, and coordinating with instructors and the Centralized Financial Aid division to verify student attendance and other information, and to resolve account discrepancies
  • Notify students or other individuals and collects overdue accounts receivable; work may involve making/receiving phone calls, informing students regarding balances that are due or guiding students regarding appropriate procedures, establishing payment options for accounts, and documenting collection activities
  • Manage pre-collection accounts identified by Student Financial Aid Managers, Student Service Supervisors, and/or online payment plan issues
  • Track delinquent accounts; prepares, prints, and mails delinquency letters and plan coupons; processes and posts returned checks; and posts student account payments and deposits
  • While following standards, procedures and applicable laws for Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, incumbent utilizes excellent interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with students, faculty and staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Associate degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related areas*
  • One (1) year experience in accounting/finance support or related area

*Minimum Education Qualification can be substituted with an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of computers and related software applications
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge of data entry techniques
  • Knowledge of mathematical concepts
  • Knowledge of customer service principles
  • Knowledge of automated accounting software packages

  • Skilled in balancing accounts
  • Skilled in reconciling financial records and information
  • Skilled in operating standard office equipment
  • Skilled in tabulating, recording, and balancing transactions
  • Skilled in researching and resolving account discrepancies
  • Skilled in utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.

Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require grasping, hearing, keyboarding, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
