BASIC PURPOSE

The Employee Relations Manager is responsible for the administration and coordination of employee relations issues and labor relations matters. Reporting to the Senior Director of Human Resources, this position serves as a trusted advisor to managers and staff providing guidance on both faculty and support staff collective bargaining agreements, grievance administration, investigations, disciplinary actions, and employment law compliance as well as managing the ADA process from start to finish



*This position has college-wide responsibilities and requires travel between all campuses and off-site locations.

**This position has been approved for a flexible work option arrangement. Flexible work options can be ended at any time by the College, Cabinet, and/or supervisors based on employee performance and/or as institutional needs change. This role requires flexibility in work scheduling to accommodate employee meetings, which may take place outside normal business hours or on scheduled remote workdays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Manage employee relations matters to ensure compliance with labor laws, College policies, and collective bargaining agreements, and to support timely, effective resolution of workplace issues.
  • Develop, implement, and administer a comprehensive employee relations process, including procedures and case management practices to ensure fair, consistent, and compliant resolution of workplace concerns.
  • Investigate, document, and resolve employee complaints; serve as a mediator in employee conflicts; and ensure outcomes align with the College’s Mission, Vision, Values, and legal requirements. Partner with HR leadership, the Title IX Coordinator, Equity, Diversity, and Belonging (EDB), and Campus Safety as appropriate.
  • Analyze employee relations and engagement data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. In collaboration with HR and College leadership, make data-driven recommendations to enhance employee engagement and workplace satisfaction.
  • Partner with HR and Employee Development and Talent Management (EDTM) teams to support organizational change initiatives, performance management efforts, and employee retention strategies.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and confidential records, documentation, and tracking of all employee relations matters.
  • Serve as a liaison between union representatives and College management to support the timely resolution of grievances and ongoing labor relations issues.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to managers and employees on workplace concerns, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and policy interpretation through one-on-one consultations. Deliver training sessions in collaboration with the Employee Development and Talent Management team (EDTM) and Equity, Diversity, and Belonging (EDB).
  • Conduct exit interviews for employees separating from the College and prepare summary reports for HR leadership identifying trends, themes, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage the ADA accommodation process, including reviewing documentation, conducting the interactive process, and collaborating with departmental supervisors to determine reasonable accommodations consistent with job requirements and employee needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. HR certification (i.e. PHR, SHRM-CP) is highly preferred.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in Human Resources with at least 2 years of employee relations experience. Higher Education experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of labor laws, workplace regulations, and HR best practices.
  • Experience working in a union environment is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex and ambiguous situations while exercising sound judgment and maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in HR software and tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate within a diverse academic environment.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills with attention to accuracy and detail.
