Job Summary

The Financial Aid Advisor is responsible for supporting students and families throughout the financial aid process by providing accurate information, guidance, and assistance with applications, eligibility requirements, and available funding opportunities. This role ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in processing financial aid records.

The position requires strong organizational, analytical, and customer service skills to effectively manage multiple responsibilities, respond to inquiries, and support student success. The Financial Aid Advisor works collaboratively with campus partners to deliver efficient, professional service aligned with Lamar University’s commitment to excellence.



Essential Job Functions

  • Analyzes and evaluates the financial viability of students and families and provides advice and counsel regarding available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
  • Reviews and assesses eligibility of applications for financial aid; exercises professional judgment to determine whether adjustments should be made.
  • Reviews for accuracy and provides approval for completed processes.
  • Responds to inquiries and research and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the unit; serves as a liaison with other constituencies in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
  • Oversees the collection, management, and reporting of data in accordance with the objectives of the position; participates in the development and implementation of data management systems and procedures, as appropriate.
  • Implements, coordinates, and oversees one or more specific administrative programs and/or service areas, as assigned.
  • Serves as subject matter expert, suggesting improvements where appropriate and maintaining procedural and policy documentation on an annual basis.
  • Trains and serves as an operational resource to other staff and /or students, as appropriate; may supervise student employees or lower-level staff.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in financial aid or a related field.
  • Two years at an institution of higher learning or another highly regulated field are required.
  • Familiar with financial documents and high competency of computer skills.
  • Strong customer service skills with a focus on supporting student needs.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as education, business, or accounting.

Physical Requirements:

  • The physical requirement is the ability to work in an office environment, which involves sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, along with occasionally stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • You may occasionally need to lift, carry, push, or pull moderate weights of up to 25 lbs.


Job Conditions:

  • Standard work hours are usually during the day.
  • Monday-Friday, but there may be occasional requirements to work evenings, holidays, or weekends due to peak times.
